15. COSTA RICAN SEA TURTLES Explore the beaches of Costa Rica under starlight as you collect critical data about leatherback sea turtles. Once a stronghold of the species, the Eastern Pacific population of leatherbacks now hovers on the brink of extinction. To understand why this ancient species has declined so rapidly and to conserve them for the future, you will conduct nightly nesting surveys, help tag each turtle observed, collect temperature data at nests, relocate eggs from nests in dangerous spots, and release hatchlings. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Very Active DURATION: 9 days

16. MARINE MAMMALS AND PREDATORS IN COSTA RICA In the pristine wilds of Golfo Dulce, a narrow inlet in southwestern Costa Rica, humpback whales, spotted dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins frolic and thrive. But tourism and development are creeping in, threatening to spoil this vulnerable tropical “fjord.” Help researchers to study these marine mammals as well as top predators such as sharks and rays, with the goal of establishing an official marine reserve in this beautiful, wild area. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy DURATION: 9 days
