1. RESTORING FIRE, WOLVES, AND BISON TO THE CANADIAN ROCKIES Waterton Lakes National Park and the Blackfoot (Kainai) tribal lands outside of the park are some of the few remaining places where you can get a sense of North America as it was before Euro-American settlers arrived. Help scientists understand how three forces of nature—fire, wolves, and bison—shape this ecosystem. Work alongside members of the Blackfoot tribe to collect data that are shaping national conservation and management policies in preparation for returning bison to one of the wildest, most ecologically intact North American landscapes. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Strenuous DURATION: 7-10 days FIELDING MONTHS: May, Jun., Jul., Aug. U.S.: $2,450–$3,500 | U.K.: £1,825–£2,600

2. CLIMATE CHANGE AT THE ARCTIC’S EDGE Perched along the Arctic treeline on the seacoast within North America’s largest wetland lies Churchill, Manitoba— the “polar bear capital of the world.” This area is extremely sensitive to small environmental changes. Warming temperatures have led to shrinking areas of polar sea ice, freshwater wetlands that are drying up, and less extensive winter snowpack that melts earlier. Help researchers to gather evidence of climate change to better understand what the future may have in store for the environment. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate DURATION: 11 days

FIELDING MONTHS: Feb., Jun., Jul., Aug., Sep. U.S.: $3,675–$3,975 | U.K.: £2,750–£2,950

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

MODERATE

CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE MACKENZIE MOUNTAINS The Mackenzie Mountains that form part of the border between Canada’s Northwest Territories and the Yukon are showing some of the most significant effects of climate change. Warming temperatures have shifted trees into the tundra, which can alter the entire ecosystem. Use high-tech equipment and your powers of observation to study the powerful effects of climate change in this region amidst a stunning array of wildlife, including one of the world’s largest herds of mountain caribou. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate DURATION: 11 days FIELDING MONTHS: Aug U.S.: $3,675 | U.K.: £2,750
