Rural summit welcomes the honourable Kevin Sorenson ŏđŏ editionap.ca

Québec-based company, Louis Garneau Sports, is a world leader in innovative qua- lity sports gear. More than a dozen experts and professio- nals in business and economics will be lea- ding workshops and seminars during the summit, with emphasis on rural economic development in Ontario. The Alberta MP has held his riding since 2000 back when he was a member of the Canadian Alliance party, prior to its merger with the Progressive Conservative party, creating Canada’s current national Conser- vative party. During his years in office, Sorenson has been an Opposition critic on the Solicitor

General when the Liberals were in power and also as his party’s critic on public safety and emergency preparedness matters. He is the sole rural Alberta MP sitting as a cabinet member in the Harper Conservative government, holding the post of Minister of State for Finance and also chairing the Stan- ding Committee on Public Safety and Natio- nal Security. Sorenson has the unique reputation of holding his riding almost without any real concerted opposition. The last federal elec- tion saw him achieve re-election with a landslide of supporting ballots from more than 82 per cent of the voters turning out at the polls.

A farmer hailing from a farm family more than a century old in the province, Soren- son also has a reputation in Parliament of honourable and conscientious behaviour and ability that has earned him respect on both sides of the House of Commons. Former Liberal MP Bob Rae described Sorenson as “well-liked”by his colleagues in the Commons. The Conservative MP earned respect from many Opposition Liberals when he took a stance against a “trash talking” tactic of the Conservation party’s national office and refused to do a mail-out in his Crowfoot riding of handbills that featured a series of attack ads targeting Justin Trudeau.
