New O.P.P. station plan revived

Aproposal to build a newOntario Provincial Police station to replace the outdated
premises on Cartier Boulevard in Hawkesbury has returned to the town council
agenda.
Late last year, council was told by the Police Services Board that it ought to
“seriously consider” the relocation of the post.
At this week’s meeting, council received from the board a resolution expressing its
formal endorsement of the construction of a new building to house the detachment.
The motion urges the town to determine “if the town of Hawkesbury will finance the
construction of this building thereby enabling the Hawkesbury Police Services Board
to proceed to the next stage of this project.”

Discussions to replace the inadequate facilities have been taking place between
town officials and O.P.P. senior staff over the past few months.
Located in a renovated section of the former Memorial Centre arena, the station is
the base for the detachment that serves Prescott County. The detachment had been
based on Highway 34, midway between Hawkesbury and Vankleek Hill, before it
moved toHawkesbury after the O.P.P. absorbed the town’s force in 1999. The town and
the O.P.P. currently have a lease on the station. Signed in 2009, the deal is set to expire
in four years.
