As usual, Lily woke up at five o’clock. She was about six or seven years old then. Her brother, fourteen months older than her, got up too. Outside it was still pitch dark. Their grandmother had already prepared breakfast—steamed rice and some dishes. While they ate, she also packed their lunchboxes. Lily carried hers on her back along with her schoolbag. Grandma helped her put on rain boots and a raincoat, and gave each of them an umbrella. Then her brother took her by the hand, and the two of them set off for school. By the time they reached the town, daylight had broken. On a downhill road, rainwater was streaming down the sides. Lily thought it looked fun. She couldn’t resist stepping into the water, walking along with her umbrella as she splashed. Suddenly, her foot slipped and she fell right down into the water with a thud, soaking her pants. Lily almost cried. She didn’t know what to do. Home was too far away to go back and change, and they were already close to school. She can’t quite remember what happened after that—only that the day felt damp and wet, as if she carried the rain with her.
