Flexo Concepts Completes Doctor Blade Innovation Lab Flexo Concepts has completed a new doctor blade innovation lab in its Plymouth, Massachusetts, manu- facturing facility. The innovation lab contains a variety of testing and measuring equipment used to assess the various me- chanical properties of materials being considered for new product development. These tests include stiff- ness, wear, surface roughness and creep, the charac- ter istic that descr ibes how polymer mater ial “relaxes” over time when pushed against a hard sur- face like an anilox roll. The lab also houses a special machine to prepare samples for testing as well as high-precision optical and weighing devices to per- form used blade analysis. By analyzing worn blades, Flexo Concepts can help customers determine the causes of their metering problems such as too much or little doctor blade pressure or when a doctor blade has been installed at an incorrect angle. Phoenix Challenge Golf Fundraiser Approaching

The Phoenix Challenge Foundation’s annual fundraiser golf tournament has been set for Wednes- day,August 24. Participants will play at the Stone- bridge Golf Club in Monroe, North Carolina. The Phoenix Challenge Foundation (PCF) Golf Tournament is the principal fundraiser for the foun- dation, which supports graphic arts and flexography. This fundraising effort is specifically designed to sup- port graphic arts students in their pursuit of higher education through program competitions and schol- arships, and in turn provide an experienced employ- ment base for the future of printing. The Foundation is seeking support through team sign-ups and a range of exclusive sponsorships: Plat- inum, Gold and Silver levels, single hole sponsorships and several other categories are available. Major event sponsors return every year, renewing their commitment to providing scholarships and building a strong workforce for tomorrow; 100 per- cent of all proceeds go directly to supporting flexog- raphy throughout college, vocational and high school scholarship competitions and programs. The Phoenix Challenge Foundation exists solely through generous donations made by industry sup- porters, businesses and individuals. The primary pur- pose is building awareness and education of flexography throughout North America. Businesses and organizations participating as sponsors will have access to a variety of options that in-turn deliver a va- riety of marketing and brand awareness. Some of the 2016 event sponsors include: Harper Corporation of America, Anderson & Vreeland, Esko, Nilpeter, Mark Andy, Phototype, Bobst, Sun Chemical, Max Daetwyler, Robbie Fantastic Flexibles, The ALC Group,W & H, Pamarco, Plastic Packaging, JR Cole In- dustries, Overnight Labels, PCMC, All Printing Re- sources, Uteco, ACTEGA-WIT, Flexo Concepts, ID Images, Flint Group, Flexon, Siegwerk Ink and CPCC. FTA, TCFA To Host Hilliard Memorial Golf Tournament For the second year, Flexographic Technical Associa- tion (FTA), in cooperation with the Twin Cities Flexo Association (TCFA) will host a golf tournament in re- membrance of longtime friend and flexographer, Gary Hilliard. The event will take place September 22 at the Prestwick Golf Club in Woodbury, Minnesota. All net proceeds will be applied toward a scholarship fund in Hilliard’s name.

The SCIENCE of flexo rollers and sleeves Skilled flexo printers know any variation in temperature, humidity, substrates and a host of other conditions will affect the quality of their work. Cleanliness of lines, accuracy of colors and softness of shades can make or break a job. But if you want to maximize profits, you need to optimize uptime, speed and quality. The anilox rollers and sleeves in your presses are only as good as the science behind them— the technology of precision . ARC rollers and sleeves are built to exacting OEM dimensions, with cell geometries engineered for efficient ink usage and precise volumes. Contact ARC today or visit our website to learn more about what the science of flexography from ARC International can do to enhance your graphics. See us at LABELEXPO booth #3002 .

Label Release Liner Seminar Coming To Chicago AWA Alexander Watson Associates Label Release Liner Seminar will be held September 12 at the Donald E Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont, Illinois, just be- fore the LabelExpo show opens at the same location. The AWA Label Release Liner Seminar program will feature presentations and interactive discussions on current industry topics, issues, and opportunities, as well as up-to-the-minute market data from release liner research specialists AWAAlexanderWatsonAssociates. This year’s program includes a session on linerless labeling, now an established technology, especially for food pre-packs, featuring speakers from Catch- point Ltd, UPM Label, Pack & Release, and Maan Group; and an update on the latest developments in optical quality control for release liner from Jochen Koenig, MD of inspection specialists Dr Schenk. A new feature of the program is a release liner recy- cling session, with presentations from TLMI Environ- mental Committee Chair Calvin Frost, Renae Kulis, Senior Director and Global Head of Sustainability at Avery Dennison, and Robert Parker, owner of label converters Label King, who is an active participant in the recycling arena.

1991, he was asked to serve on the Board in 1995. A year later, he assumed leadership of the scholarship committee. In five years as chairman, TLMI’s scholar- ship contribution tripled from $200,000 in 1995 to $600,000 in 2011. The fund, which stands at $1,000,000 for 2016, is used to award scholarships to students demonstrating an interest in the tag and label industry. The TLMI Board named one of the scholarships in Bell’s honor. For the third year running at its award ceremony, FINAT also rewarded exceptional achievement in the arena of recycling. UK cider makers Brothers Drinks and German label printers Hagmaier Etiketten & Druck were the headliners in the 2016 FINAT RecyclingAwards. Brothers Drinks Co. Ltd. of Shepton Mallet, UK, won the End User Award for its early involvement in a spe- cial program focused on the recycling of used PET re- lease liner, and jointly set up by labelstock producers Avery Dennison and UK plastics processors Polymer Extrusion Technologies. For the second time, the Converter Award was won by Hagmaier Etiketten & Druck of Münsingen, Ger- many, because release liner, matrix waste, and other related secondary materials — paper and film — are all recycled by the company, eliminating landfill.
