Faculty Rights and Responsibilities related to Budget
Our Budget and Planning Committee drafted new Code language related to faculty rights and responsibilities related to department, college, and university budgets. This new language makes clear that faculty should be consulted and involved in budget decisions at all levels of the university. This Code language should be at the Board approval level by Fall 2019.
Comprehensive Review of the Faculty Code
In collaboration with the President, we continue to be engaged in the process of comprehensively reviewing and revising the Faculty Code. Our goal in this process is to clarify existing Code language as well as strengthen the guidelines related to faculty role in shared governance.
NWCCU Revised Standards:
The Northwest Council on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) recently proposed a new set of accreditation standards. The Faculty Senate is concerned about the removal of language related to academic freedom as well as changes that deemphasize the commitment to shared governance. We shared a letter detailing our concerns with the NWCCU. Our concerns are shared by other institutions in Washington and Oregon, and many institutions have provided feedback to the NWCCU. We ask that the Board pay close attention to changes in accreditation standards and advocate for shared governance and academic freedom in conversations with commissioners and legislators.
Updates on Senate Initiatives:
Faculty Senate committees have remained productive this academic year in moving forward important Senate initiatives which we believe enhance students’ academic experience at Central.
General Education Implementation
We remain focused on a successful implementation of the new General Education Program for Fall 2019. The transition to the new program will provide students with new opportunities to engage in learning and in the community early in their college careers, make connections, and think critically. We believe the program will enhance both recruitment and retention efforts.
