Board of Trustees meeting Agenda | May 2019

May 3, 2019

Dear Chair Erickson and Board of Trustees Members:

I appreciate this opportunity to submit a brief overview of the activities of the Faculty Senate since your last meeting in February 2019.

Over the 2018-2019 academic year the Faculty Senate has continued to engage as an active participant in efforts to improve students’ experiences at Central Washington University. We have partnered with units across campus to prepare for the new general education program to begin in Fall 2019; we have collaborated with the Provost’s office to facilitate important policy changes to remove barriers and better support students; and we are co-leading a process of reforming the advising experience at Central. We have also facilitated conversations about shared governance, consultation, and trust. We believe these topics are critical for maintaining the academic integrity of the institution, fulfilling our mission, and best serving our students. These conversations and corresponding policy and Faculty Code changes will continue into next year and beyond, and we appreciate the support of the Board as we continue to clarify the role of faculty in the governance of the institution.

Faculty Code Updates:

Thank you for your approval of the Code changes we brought forward in February 2019. We do not have any Code changes for your approval at this meeting, but we would like to update you on one change you have previously reviewed and share an upcoming change.

Consultation Process in Cases of Reorganization

In October 2018 we brought forward a Code change that detailed the consultation process in cases of reorganization. The Board decided not to vote on the Code because the Provost Council raised concerns with the language and its placement in Code. We have worked closely with the Provost Council and President since October to come to an agreement about the language and to move the language to university policy instead of Code. We are pleased to inform you that we have reached an agreement with the Provost Council, and Faculty Senate approved the new policy language early in May. We hope to see it approved as university policy in June.
