Elgin Theatre Guild: What’s in Store this Season? by Peri Hayes It was during Timothy Hedden’s high school days when he initially became involved with the Elgin Theatre Guild (ETG). Over the years, Timothy has contributed to an array of productions as an actor, director, and producer. Now, as the leaves begin to fall, he enthusiastically sheds light on this upcoming ETG season. “I decided, when I took on the role of Artistic Director, that St. Thomas was ready for something a little different. I was interested in taking big swings, and bringing compelling and moving theatre to the stage. All four of the plays we selected represent a chance to build a new audience, and challenge the existing one in exciting ways.” Top Girls, written by Caryl Churchill and directed by Timothy, is a “blistering” look at the cost of success for women in the 1980s. Thereafter, “ A Stork Club Story , by Paul Regan and Brett McCaig, and directed by Heather May, brings us back in time to the legendary club that once called Port Stanley ‘home’. This world premiere is funny, endearing, and quite heartfelt. Our next director, Sean Quigley, takes a new spin on one of the Bard’s classics as two star-crossed lovers meet…in a nursing home. That’s right, in our take on Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare, we flip the ages and explore that falling in love is not just a young person’s game.” For their season finale, Timothy narrates, “We end our season with Almost, Maine, written by John Cariani and directed by Desmond Nanassy. It’s a romantic comedy comprised of a prologue, an epilogue, and nine loosely connected short vignettes. Maine, the play unfolds simultaneously at nine o’clock on a cold, moonless Friday night in the middle of winter as the northern lights shine overhead.” Asked what drew Timothy to this artistic space, he passionately responds, “So often when you get involved in the arts, it’s because you are looking for a place to express your creativity.
