Officers of the Russell Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were kept busy during the past few weeks. The investigation revealed that two men were stealing cooking oil from the business. Assault and other charges On July 27, at about 9 p.m., officers responded to a break and enter complaint on Limoges Road in Russell Township. Mayer also received a slew of other charges relating to an August 5 break and entering, again on Limoges Road. Once on site, officers determined that an altercation
had taken place between two men and a woman. Mayer was therefore charged with one count of assault with a weapon, two counts of uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death, break, enter dwelling house - commit indictable offence and failing to comply with conditions of undertaking given by the officer in charge. He appeared in L’Orignal Court on August 12. The Russell County detachment has had reports of people trying to sell fake jewellery for gasoline money at local service stations in the Village of Embrun. The same fraud routine may be attempted at other service stations elsewhere in the Prescott-Russell region. The suspects may sometimes use pressure tactics in order to get a sale. Russell Township is one of many Ontario municipalities willing to accept com- mercial marijuana stores as part of its business community. The township now has new policy guidelines to help it deal with any applications for provincial approval of a cannabis retail outlet. Township council approved a revised cannabis retail policy during its August 12 session. The policy authorizes administra- tion to review and provide comment to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) about any approval applications for a cannabis retail outlet in Russell Township. Council asked administration, earlier in June, to develop the policy because, as noted in the current report, “Time limits do not make it practical” for staff to provide council with a report on applications to the AGCO before they are approved. The provin- cial government is holding a second lottery for 50 cannabis retail approvals, with the application window open from August 7 to 9 and the approval lottery itself scheduled for August 20. Seven application approvals are for Eastern Ontario. Township staff will monitor the AGCO’s website for applications from Russell Township. Staff will review the available information and then provide the AGCO with a detailed comments report based on the municipality’s new cannabis retail policy.

That includes schools, daycares and nurseries, youth centres, libraries,
community centres, facilities that provide mental health or addiction treatment ser- vices, public parks, recreation facilities, and playgrounds, churches and Sunday schools, women’s shelters, and other facilities. The township policy also discourages “clustering” situations where two or more outlets are located close to each other in a business neighbourhood. The policy also forbids cannabis stores setting up in resi- dential neighbourhoods.

The Conservative candidate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell in this October’s federal election accuses the Trudeau government of failing the riding’s farm sector in recent foreign export trade dealings. “The patience of GPR farmers is wearing thin,” stated Pierre Lemieux, former MP and Conservative candidate for the Glengarry- Prescott-Russell riding, in an email message sent out to media. He criticized Agriculture Minister Marie- Claude Bibeau for failing to have a promised compensation program in place by June, this year, for dairy, egg, and poultry farmers affected by changes to Canada’s supply- management system for agriculture. “It is now well into July,” stated Lemieux,

La Cité de Clarence-Rockland a, pour sa part, levé son interdiction de feu à ciel ouvert le 7 aout dernier, suivie par la municipalité de Russell, le 12 aout. The MP announced, August 7, in the Village of Hammond, $955,128 from the federal government’s $2 billion Women Entrepreneurship Strategy fund (WES) to the Prescott-Russell Community Develop- ment Corporation (PRCDC). The money will go towards coaching, mentorship, invest- ment, and skills development programs for women in business in rural francophone communities and Official Language Minority Communities. The aim of the WES fund is to help double the number of businesses owned by women in Canada by 2025. The program is a joint project of the ministries of Small Business and Export Promotion and of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
More women are making their mark in the business world in Prescott-Russell and the rest of Canada, and the federal government is helping support more future women entrepreneurs. “The women entrepreneurs and business leaders of Prescott-Russell make incredible contributions to our economy and commu- nity every day,” stated MP Francis Drouin of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. “From tackling pay equity to modernizing parental leave, this government is taking action on gender equality because when women succeed, we all succeed.”

Depuis les deux derniers étés, le Groupe de services communautaires Kawabunga organise un programme de bourses afin de permettre aux jeunes de la communauté de Casselman, Saint-Albert, Limoges, Crysler, Saint-Isidore et les environs, âgés de 4 à 12 ans, de participer aux camps d’été Kawabunga. Cette année, trois organismes, dont le Comptoir populaire Deguire, la Fromagerie Saint-Albert et le groupe de services communautaires Kawabunga, ont contribué au programme de bourses. En tout, ce sont 20 familles et 25 enfants qui ont mérité une semaine gratuite de camp. Le propriétaire-exploitant du Tigre Géant d’Embrun a décidé de lancer un défi à son personnel dans le cadre de sa campagne de financement de la Fondation des maladies du cœur. S’ils pouvaient battre leur objectif de 2000 $, il les laissait lui teindre les cheveux en bleu et l›habiller comme un personnage du film, Frozen. Il a gagné son pari de paraitre une fois de plus dans le livre des Records Guinness avec le plus grand nombre de moissonneuses- batteuses fonctionnant en même temps pendant plus de cinq minutes. « Je suis heureux et très satisfait, a-t-il dit humblement dimanche dernier sur le site de la Fromagerie Saint-Albert, là où se tenait l’évènement. On avait 250 machines, mais sept ont lâché. Donc on remporte haut la main avec un total de 243 moissonneuses- batteuses. » L’évènement a eu lieu sous les yeux impressionnés de milliers de visiteurs qui voulaient faire partie de cette importante journée. BOOTS & BLING RAISES NEARLY $58,000 FOR WDMH FOUNDATION

This year’s Boots & Bling fundraiser for the Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) raised nearly $58,000. The event, which was held on June 8 at Dixon’s Corners, supports the Foundation’s Family Care Fund. “We are so excited to announce the grand total,” said Cindy Peters, Manager of Direct Mail and Events. “We want to thank everyone who helped to make the event a great success.” Planning is already underway for the 2020 event, which will be held on June 13 at the same location. “We hope everyone will mark their calendars and join us again next year!” added Cindy. Les pompiers de Casselman ont tenu leur 14e tournoi de golf, fin juillet, au Club de golf Casselview de Casselman. Ils étaient 148 joueurs de la communauté de Casselman et les environs à prendre part à l’évènement. Le maire de Casselman Daniel Lafleur et le député libéral fédéral Francis Drouin n’ont pas manqué d’y participer. Ce tournoi a permis aux pompiers volontaires de faire l’achat d’une caméra thermique, utilisée lors d’importants incendies.
