Woodland burials What is a woodland burial? Woodland burial was once seen as a niche alternative, however today many people are looking for a more environmentally friendly method of burial. We offer a dignified service that is provided within a natural setting. You will not see rows of headstones, just beautiful countryside. Graves can be marked with bronze plaques. To protect the health of our woodland, graves are not placed among the roots of mature trees. Instead, each grave has the option to be marked by the planting of a native tree or shrub of choice, a meaningful living memorial that enhances biodiversity and allows the woodland to flourish naturally. Our philosophy is to create a new wood through the planting of native trees, thereby adding to the country’s tree stock. The native trees planted provide an ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife, helping to sustain the surrounding environment.

Why create a new woodland?
Woodlands and trees are essential to life and have numerous benefits for both wildlife and people. • Provide shelter • Absorb and store carbon • Generate oxygen • Provide fuel and food • Rejuvenate and stabilise the soil • Create habitats for wild flora and fauna Mayfields trees Mayfields are working with the Wildlife Trust to ensure a programmed planting of native trees, creating a woodland habitat in keeping with the local area. To ensure the long term health of the wood we have a planned management programme for our trees. This will entail trimming, lopping and even cutting down trees to ensure an ongoing cycle of growth. In certain areas of the grounds, trees are planted on individual graves, however this is only if you decide to purchase a plot with a tree.

Music and visual life tributes
Music selection The media library covers all styles and genres, ensuring the music you require will be available. We can help you select the appropriate track or even arrange for recordings of personal performances or very old recordings to be placed on the system. Holding pictures A special picture of your loved one can be a lovely way to personalise your service and can be shown on screen during the service. Alternatively you may wish to use an image from our library, ranging from national flags to soft landscape scenes. Visual life tribute A personal visual life tribute is the ideal way of adding an extremely personal touch to the funeral service. A combination of family photos, images and home video of your loved one is then overlaid with favourite music from the media library.
The music played at the funeral is an important choice and for many it remains an abiding memory. Music does not have to be limited to classical pieces or a hymn. Favourite pop songs, musicals and even music recorded by a family member can help personalise the funeral service. Multi media Mayfields Woodland Burial Ground has joined tradition with technology and has a media system which provides an extensive music library with a multi media screen in the service hall. The state of the art system provides video/audio playback, recording and live web casting facilities.
“Music does not have to be limited to classical pieces or a hymn.”

A member of the team can accompany you to the plot to inter the ashes for you or you may wish to conduct the service yourself. Plots can be marked with a bronze memorial plaque, and some woodland ashes plots can have a dedicated tree, creating a lasting, living tribute.
Ashes scattering
The scattering trail runs along the banks of the River Mersey offering views across the city of Liverpool. A member of the team will transfer the ashes into an urn and accompany you down to the trail to scatter, in a dignified manner.

Memorial plaques
To maintain the beautiful natural environment at Mayfields we allow only a bronze memorial plaque instead of a traditional headstone. Stone, ceramic or metal markers are not permitted at the burial ground and all memorials must be purchased and approved through Mayfields.
Graves for full natural burial or ashes can be marked with a single bronze plaque. All our bronze plaques are hand made, specific to each individual needs and wishes. All memorials can be personalised with your loved one’s details, a personal message and motif design.

Any flowers placed on the graves will be removed once they start to show signs of deterioration. However, we ask you to keep these to a minimum and ask that they are kept as natural as possible. For a memorial service or ashes interment, you can arrange it yourself through Mayfields Woodland Burial Ground. What type of coffin, casket or urn is acceptable? All coffins, caskets and urns must be biodegradable. Is embalming permitted? While we encourage natural burials and therefore prefer that bodies are not embalmed, embalming is accepted. Please contact us to discuss this further. Is the ground consecrated? No, any faith can be buried here and it does not matter where you live, the charges are the same. However, individual graves can be blessed at the time of burial. Do I have to live locally?
