in Europe that looks at current status, anticipated market sizing and growth to 2022, converter bench- mark data, and production trends. As a percentage of the European printed label mar- ket in 2016, the study showed, digital represented 9.7 percent of market value, a percentage higher than the overall global figure but still a relatively small per- centage of the European printed label industry’s total value — in excess of € 16 billion. Of the 2000 digital label presses installed in Eu- rope, 76 percent are toner-based systems and 24 per- cent are inkjet/hybrid. However, the growth curve to 2022 shows inkjet press installation growth expand- ing at a higher year-over-year rate than toner-based press systems. Converters were also asked to define the challenges they are experiencing with their current digital presses. While cost of ownership came in at the top, press downtime due to service issues was in second place and the challenge of finding enough business to fill the available digital capacity came next. How- ever, another problem — printing high-opacity whites — was added to the list for toner-based press- es, and finishing requirements and color matching were also noted by inkjet press owners.

The compa- ny’s Digital One label press has increased capacity since May by more than 800 percent. According to Primera, this allows the company to better serve their customers by offering 24-hour lead time on most jobs. Typically, Primera uses the digital label press to pro- duce 125,000 labels of 200 different designs in under two hours. This complex, highly versioned job mix keeps the company’s staff of 12 busy, with five em- ployed at the digital facility, and another seven at a nearby factory that houses both water-based and UV flexo presses. Ultimate Flex Hosts Open House

Premium flexographic packaging production was on full display at an early August open house for Ulti- mate Flex and its parent corporation Ultimate Paper Box. The City of Industry, California, firm welcomed 300 guests to a Las Vegas-style event in which a quar- ter-mile red carpet and velvet rope line threaded through its two Southern California facilities and pro- vided demonstrations of its flexographic and offset presses while an outdoor stage entertained visitors with models clad only in clothes made from Ulti- mate’s flexo and packaging materials. Janak Patel, the owner of Ultimate, and his execu- tive team, opened the doors to their newly expand- ed facility, and guided guests along a pathway past live demonstrations of its print production. The Ulti- mate team was surrounded by its sponsors from the industry: Koenig & Bauer, Bobst, Prisco, Anderson Vreeland, RM Machinery, International Paper, and Windmoeller & Hoelscher. The open house was a celebration of the firm’s newly tripled facility — from 40,000 square feet to 120,000 square feet — and its new capabilities, expanded capacity, and its equipment installations.

takeover of Albert-Frankenthal AG. The time was right, according to company CEO Claus Bolza- Schünemann, to revert back to the original brand of Koenig & Bauer. “Koenig & Bauer AG today has 33 subsidiaries,” said Bolza-Schünemann. “Twelve of them produce their own products for their own customers. We see the company anniversary as an ideal time to place all ac- tivities of the Group, from classic printing to digital printing — including prepress and post-press and top service — under a strong common roof again.” A Company Is Born The company was launched by two inventors and entrepreneurs named Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer. As early as 1814, the Times in London, Eng- land, was being printed using a cylinder press invent- ed by the two men. In 1817, Koenig & Bauer founded the world’s fir st printing press factor y in the monastery in Oberzell, Germany. In 1876, the compa- ny delivered the first web-fed press and in 1901 it moved into a new plant in Wurzburg, where its head- quarters remains to this day. The relaunch, according to Bolza-Schünemann, is in- tended to strengthen the employees’ pride in the his- tor y of the company, including the many new employees who have joined the Group through ac- quisitions. The company hopes that old and new cus- tomers alike will feel the strength of this traditional Koenig & Bauer is currently working to complete a new demo center that is being assembled to show- case digital and flexographic printing. Ultimate Flex was founded in 2013 to serve the flexible packaging market and operates as a sister di- vision to its parent Ultimate Paper Box, a manufactur- er of folding cartons and litho labels established in 1995.The two firms employ 130 skilled craftsmen. At the Windmoeller & Hoelscher 52-inch Miraflex AM 10-color flexographic press demonstration, Ulti- mate was running live the production of 300 of its personalized goodie bags presented to each guest. The bags, emblazoned with Ultimate’s logo, were later filled with a premium chocolate box produced on the firm’s Bobst die cutters. “The flexographic division is one of our fastest growing,” said Patel. “We’re experiencing 18 percent growth in this area. Currently, flexo makes up 30 per- cent of our business with offset paperboard packag- ing the other 70 percent. We anticipate that quickly flexo and offset will comprise an equal 50/50 split of our business.” Ultimate’s customer base is 95 percent serving the food market and 5 percent serving the cosmetic market. The global population is growing, he said, and more people are moving into the middle class with a higher per capita income. The demographics are changing, as well, with increasing life expectancy, urbanization and shrinking average household size.
