THE CHOSEN PEOPLE, THE LAND AND THE BOOK Notes Concerning the Jews and Prophecy Compiled by James A Yaus, Superintendent of Jewish Work, Bible Institute of Los Angeles. Present Condition of the Zionist Movement When Palestine was first released from the centuries-old grip of the Turk it was to be expected that the whole Christ ian world, as well as all Jewry, would be almost swept off their feet with enthusiasm, as the greatest obstacle to the resettling of the Jews in Palestine was removed. Zionism has passed and must yet pass through many severe trials before its members can hope to realize the fulfillment of their heart's desire,,viz: the establishment of a Jewish National Home in Palestine. Practical problems are presenting themselves now which may have been more or less obscured by the earlier enthu siasm over the Jewish Charter itself. Theoretically, Zioism makes a strong appeal to the im agination and sentiment of the Jew, but from a practical standpoint there are still many obstacles to be surmounted before the Zionists’ hope can be realized. 1st, The Arab Question: The much-mooted Arab problem is far from being settled yet. While it is true that there is practically no friction be tween the Jew that is born and raised in Palestine and the Arab (due to a better understanding of each other), yet on the other hand there is bitter feeling between the Arab and the iEuropean Jew who emigrates to Palestine. A strong under-current of feeling exists between Euro pean Jews and Arabs and open clashes between them are of frequent occurrence, making it necessary for England to maintain a considerable force of British troops there to in sure order.- -1 2 nd, Dissatisfaction with High Commissioner The appointment of a Jew as High Commissioner or Gen eral over Palestine has created considerable dissatisfaction among the Arabs and Moslems, and attempts are being made to have him re-called. In justice to Sir Herbert Samuels it must be said that his is a difficult post to fill, and further that he has thus far acquitted himself very creditably, proving that he has ability of a very high order. 3rd, Zionism Crippled Financially The war has both helped and hindered the cause of Zion ism. It has helped Zionism by freeing Palestine from Turk ish rule hut it has hindered Zionism by impoverishing those wealthy European Jews who were financially the Zionist movement. Today Zionism languishes because of lack of finances. Creating salaried positions for many that return to Pales tine confers no lasting benefit even on the few, but still enlarges the economic problem. Before Zionism can hope to prosper on a large scale Palestine must be made to furn ish employment for and to support its increasing Jewish population. To make the Country self-sustaining requires the development of industries and natural resources. This requires the outlay of large sums of money, and plans for raising such are now in progress. • Dr. Chaim Weizmann Visits America Dr. Chaim Weizmann, the leading Zionist of the day, is now beginning a tour of America with the object of raising finances for the Palestine Foundation Fund. Speaking of his intended visit, “The Jewish Chronicle’’ says—“His jour ney and its purpose are indicative of the position at which
