Depuis 15 ans, vous vous illustrez dans le paysage litté- raire français. Quel regard portez-vous sur votre parcours ? J e trouve que mon parcours est curieux, dans tous les sens du terme. On dit d’une personne qu’elle est curieuse quand elle semble singulière, mais également quand elle est ou- verte sur d’autres horizons. Je me retrouve là-dedans. Ma car- rière est finalement étrange, car je me destinais à devenir en - seignant et cela ne s’est pas déroulé ainsi. Et mon parcours est également ouvert sur différents horizons, car j’ai une liberté totale dans mes choix de programmation, et d’invités notam- ment. Le jour où l’on arrête d’être curieux, on ne peut plus faire ce métier, je crois. La culture est une aventure humaine. Quelles sont les rencontres qui vous ont le plus marqué ? C’est une question difficile à appréhender, car rien qu’avec l’émission Boomerang , que j’ai animée sur France Inter durant 8 ans, j’ai interviewé 1 700 artistes. D’autant plus que, selon moi, une interview réussie est un échange où j’apprends quelque chose sur moi-même. Quelques rencontres m’ont particulière- ment frappé pour des raisons intimes. Je me rappelle avoir reçu
For the past 15 years, you have been making a name for your- self on the French literary scene. How do you see your career? I find my career path curious, in every sense of the word. We say that a person is curious when they seem singular but also when they are open to other horizons and I think that reflects how things have been for me. My career is ulti- mately strange because I was destined to become a teacher and it didn't turn out that way. And my walk of life is also very much about being open to different horizons because I notably enjoy total freedom in my choices of programming and guests. I think that if one ceases to be curious one simply cannot do this job properly. Culture is a human adventure. Which encounters have had the greatest impact on you ? That’s a tough question to answer because I interviewed 1,700 artists just on the Boomerang program that I hosted on France Inter for eight years. Especially since, in my opinion, a successful interview is an exchange where I learn something about myself. Some encounters have particularly struck me for personal rea- sons. I remember hosting Joan Baez whom I listened to a lot as

Je me rappelle avoir été ému et avoir compris des choses, notamment cette façon de voir la vie qu’avaient mes parents. Cela m’a beaucoup enrichi. D’autres rencontres avec de grands cinéastes américains comme Francis Ford Coppola ont été des révélations. J’avais été frappé à la fois par son humilité et par son sens de la mise en scène, même en inter- view. Je me souviens également d’une interview mémorable du prix Nobel de

littérature Toni Morrison, romancière américaine, que je suis allé voir chez elle à New York juste avant l’élection de Donald Trump. C’était une émission très forte où elle annonçait le pire qui atten- dait son pays. Une prédiction qui se réalisait le lendemain. En mars 2022, une enquête sur la lecture des 7-25 ans* montre que la lecture « loisirs » décline fortement chez les jeunes après l’entrée au collège. Qu’est-ce que ce constat vous inspire ? J’ai tendance à me méfier des études et sondages qui expliquent que c’était mieux avant. En réalité, on vit toujours et plus que ja- mais dans une société saturée d'écrits. Nos jeunes sont saturés d’écrits. Ils passent leur vie sur des écrans où des choses sont écrites, rédigeant des textes sur de nombreux supports. Par ail- leurs, le succès du pass Culture prouve bien cette appétence des jeunes pour la lecture. Simplement, les jeunes lisent autre chose que ce que leurs aînés lisaient, comme les mangas. Il faut abso- lument se réjouir de ça, selon moi.

I tend to be suspicious of studies and surveys which explain that things used to be better. In reality, we still live in a society sa- turated with writing. Our young people are saturated with wri- ting. They spend their lives on screens where things are written, writing texts through many media. Moreover, the success of the Pass Culture (cultural pass) is proof of young people's appetite for reading. Young people are simply reading something different from their elders, such as mangas for example. I think this is so- mething to be welcomed.
