It’s Sunday at noon and three members of the Chesser family are getting ready to breeze out the door to go to their twice- a-week rehearsal for The Greely Players’ upcoming production of Beauty and the Beast. MomMaria, dadMarty, and sonHayden have spent every Sunday afternoon together in rehearsal since December, and they all look forward to the April 6 opening night. Hayden is Lumière in the Disneymusical based on the animated movie of the same name, while his dad takes on the role of Maurice, Belle’s father. Maria is the assis- tant stage manager for the production. All three were already deep into rehearsals for the Russell Association of Performing Arts’ recent production of Young Frankenstein when auditions for Beauty and the Beast were held. “We were all enjoying working together in the RAPA show and I knew we would enjoy The Greely Players just as much”, explained Maria, who has worked as a RAPA stage manager several times. “I wouldn’t want to be on stage myself, but this is one way I can be involved.” Hayden has had roles with The Greely Players before as Mike TeeVee in WillyWon- ka and the Chocolate Factory , Kurt in The Sound of Music , and the munchkin mayor in The Wizard of Oz . The role of Lumière appealed to Hayden from the start. “I have always liked playing a character that provides comedic relief in a show,” he

said, “and Lumière is the main source of it in Beauty and the Beast .” Marty, an RCMP chief superintendent, caught the acting bug later in life with a small role in RAPA’s The Full Monty , and last fall appeared as the singing blind monk in Young Frankenstein . “When I used to drive the kids for play practice, I toldmyself that when I hadmore
time I would like to try doing theatre,” he said. “Disney’s B&B is one of my favourite stories, and it has been good fun coming with Hayden and Maria and meeting great people.” “We’re proud to foster community in- volvement in our productions by including actors of all ages,” said Joan Bruce-Nibogie, Greely Players president. “Every year, we try
to include children in the show. We often have multiple family members performing together.” The Greely Players’ production of Beauty and the Beast will take place at the Greely Community Centre, April 6 to 9, at 7:30 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sun- day.
