A new retail outlet centre is coming to Gloucestershire
A £60million retail centre full of “high-quality stores offering goods at discount prices” is coming to Tewkesbury and will create 1,000 jobs. Plans for the 50acre site next to Junction 9 of the M5 motorway were approved in 2016, despite Tewkesbury Borough Council’s own planning officers advising against it. Back then, property consultants Bilfinger said that the proposal was “was "likely to have a significant adverse impact upon the health of Tewkesbury town centre and Gloucester city centre.” But it was approved, and over the Easter holidays, new documents were lodged with the local authority giving an idea of what the scheme could look like and how the work would be phased. That was in a reserved matters planning application submitted by Robert Hitchins Ltd, to go alongside the outline planning agreement that was agreed in June 2016. The reserved matters application is, according to the developers, “the first of many and provides details
about the infrastructure that needs to be put in place.” It also sets out the design principles that will form a benchmark for the scheme and the public realm areas, as well as a detailed surface water drainage strategy. The nature of the development, retail floor space or access arrangements specified in the original application remain unchanged. The planned development that will also contain a garden centre sits on a parcel of land to the east of Junction 9 and south of the A46 and is bound on its southern edge by the Tirle Brook. It sits alongside a housing scheme – currently under construction by Robert Hitchins – that is providing 1,000 new homes. According to a statement on their website, Robert Hitchins say the development is “expected to bring 1,000 jobs on completion and more than 200 during construction.” It added: "The out-of-town retail outlet centre will provide a range of high-quality stores offering goods at discount prices.
