APR To Offer Elite Printer Workshop In October All Printing Resources (APR) will hold a two-day Elite Printer Workshop on October 23-25 at the com- pany’s Glendale Heights, Illinois, USA Technology Center. The seminar is open to all printers and con- verters and will provide high-level technical training targeted at a range of company job functions, includ- ing sales, marketing, customer service, design, pre- press and management. Attendees will explore what it takes for converters to push the limits of 4-color and 7-color process printing. This includes how running to standards like G7 and enforcing process control procedures enable companies to raise their print quality standards to new levels. Sessions topics will include considerations for de- sign and prepress conversions, press fingerprinting and characterization, and process control from pre- press into the pressroom. Each day will feature live flexo demonstrations, walking attendees through the characterization and fingerprinting process. Presenters will review how measurements are utilized for image optimization, proofing, and color management.

Smithers Pinpoints Key Drivers Of Market Growth Smithers Pira has published a research study outlin- ing four of the key trends driving the market for printed food packaging. According to the report, The Future of Printing for Food Packaging to 2023 , in 2018 the global market for printed primary food packaging is $227.2 billion and 79.4 million tons, with a printed area of 394.6 billion square meters. The market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate of around 3.6 per- cent from 2018 to 2023, with the global market reaching a value of $271.3 billion, equating to 95 mil- lion tons and a printed area of 472.4 billion square meters by 2023. A range of both technology- and consumer-related trends will drive this forecast market growth. Four of the key trends identified by Smithers Pira’s research are as follows. Lightweighting The food and packaging industries are, where possi- ble, reducing the weight of packaging — to make cost savings from reductions in material require- ments and lower transportation costs. All packaging materials are affected, particularly the inherently heavier glass and metal packaging formats. Continu- ing developments in the designs of flexible packag- ing pouches are extending their use for a wider range of foods and drinks to replace heavier glass, rigid plastic or metal packaging. Lighter weight PET bottles are increasingly being used for beers and non-alcoholic drinks in place of metal cans and glass bottles. The shift to flexible and rigid plastic packaging for an increased number of food and drink products has gradually eroded metal packaging demand over the last five years, with this trend expected to continue up to 2023. In turn, there are implications for providers of printing inks, and compatibility with food-safe practices. Sustainability Most food packaging is single-use and enters the waste disposal process once the food or drink has been consumed. Packaging materials such as metal cans, glass bottles and paperboard cartons are rela- tively easy to collect and recycle; but there is grow- ing concern around the world about the level of plastic packaging that is going to landfill, for incinera- tion or into the environment. Leading brand owners, retailers and packaging com- panies are taking an active approach to this problem,

300 employees), also sponsored by Flint Group Nar- row Web, went to RotoMetrics for its RotoRepel, a non-stick coating that’s available on its solid and flex- ible cutting dies. This technology reportedly mini- mizes adhesive pick-up and transfer and has resulted in significant benefits, including: Improved press effi- ciency, presses running faster, significant reduction in downtime, longer tool life, waste reduction and lower tool costs. Avery Dennison won the Award for Sustainability, sponsored by Labels & Labeling magazine.Avery Den- nison partnered with EcoVadis, a sustainability per- formance rating solution, to operate a collaborative dashboard providing sustainability ratings and perfor- mance improvement tools for their global supply chain. The platform reportedly deliver simple and re- liable scorecards to monitor supplier best practices.A total of 21 internationally recognized sustainability criteria are reviewed and separated into four criteria themes: environment, social, ethics and supply chain. R. Stanton Avery Pioneer Award The final award of the night, the R. Stanton Avery Pi- oneer Award, which was previously announced in June, went to Alex Knott, of the Dow Chemical Com- pany. This award, sponsored by Avery Dennison, hon- ors the contribution an individual has made which has really impacted the label and package printing sector, whether their pioneering work has spanned two years or two decades. Knott is a senior scientist in the company and leader of a global team that has pioneered the latest innovations in pressure-sensitive silicone release liner coating technology, including the introduction of Dow’s Flat Release Systems. This technology has not only revolutionized high speed, low coating weight, high performance and la- belstock release liner production, but has also been a key factor in helping to drive down silicone coat- ing costs. For the label converter and end-user, this has contributed to superior waste stripping perfor- mance at ever-increasing press running speeds, as well as enabling much higher label application line speeds on the latest automated product decoration systems. This work has helped build Knott’s global reputation as a leading authority on silicone pres- sure-sensitive systems. “This is an industry that dares to be different and push the boundaries of excellence and technology, but this would not be possible without the sheer de- termination and hard work of our many industry col- leagues around the world,” said Mike Fairley, chair of the judges.

and have either established their own initiatives, or are working with organizations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation toward a target of 100 per- cent reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by no later than 2025. One factor in the sustainability of packaging relates to deinking. The quality of recovered material from recycling processes for plastic and board food pack- aging depends on whether inks and overprint var- nishes used to decorate and label the packaging can be completely removed. The success in removing these inks varies significantly between paper and board waste and plastic waste. Growth Of Water-Based And UV/EB Inks Water-based and UV/EB inks have shown the high- est growth rates in the printed food packaging mar- ket over the past five years, as printers in all geographic regions have been subjected to environ- mental regulations on VOC emissions and wastes from their production processes. These two ink types continue to exhibit the fastest growth rates up to 2023. Water-based inks have longer drying times than sol-

vent-based inks, under the same drying conditions. This restricts the growth in the use of these inks on some high-speed print lines despite their environ- mental advantages, although porous substrates such as paper and board are less problematic at fast print speeds. The limitations on speed of drying on non- porous substrates such as flexible packaging are less of a barrier when used for the shorter production runs that are now becoming more commonplace. The growth in the use of UV inks may be further boosted over the next five years by a greater adop- tion of UV-LED lamps on print lines. Although these lamps are more expensive than mercury arc types, they are easier and more economical to use and gen- erate little or no heat during operation, opening up their use for thermally sensitive packaging materials. The cost of UV-LED inks is also higher than that of conventional UV inks, restricting their wider adop- tion until material costs can be reduced. Fast Growth In Asia Markets The Asia-Pacific region has exhibited one of the fastest regional growth rates over the past five years, increasing its share of global printed food packaging demand from 35 percent of the value in 2013 to 37 percent by 2018.The growth in value of printed food packaging in North America was slightly lower than that for the global market from 2013 to 2018; while sales value in Western Europe, grew at a slower rate over this period, with the result that the region’s share declined. Asia will continue to lead the growth in food pack- aging demand from 2018 to 2023, particularly from the two key economies in the region of China and India. The Middle East already has high urbanization rates, but the packaged food and drink market still of- fers a high growth potential. Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa also offer good growth potential over the next five years but as they start from a low base they will still only account for a minor com- bined share of global sales by 2023. Amcor Plans $25 Million Capital Investment Amcor, Madison, Wisconsin, plans to invest more than $25 million to upgrade its Madison facilities starting in 2018 and into 2019 to expand capacity, improve quality and reduce waste while updating technology. The planned investment includes the ac- quisition of new machinery and updates to existing infrastructure.
