Help kids speak well The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) has a new video series aimed at helping parents of newborns and infants to help their children learn to speak and to speak well. The Lets Talk! video series was developed to assist parents to support and develop their children’s communi- cation skills during the key period between birth and the age of five when children are most open and able to learn new things. Studies on how children develop show that these are the most important years for a child’s language skills development and will influence how they com- municate with others as they mature. The video series is available online at www.eohu.ca/talk. Parents with questions or concerns about their child’s language skills are encouraged to talk to their family doctor or call 1-800-267-7120 for details on the EOHU’s own speech and language development program.– Gregg Chamberlain Day Parade and the Memorial service on the Sunday prior to Remembrance Day so the community can partake. We have other fundraisers, to support our operating costs, such as Breakfast with Santa, St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and Dance and a supper or two. These fundraisers are lacking volunteers. If it wasn’t for a small cadre of volunteers, the branch’s operating budget would suffer. Our branch is looking for members to serve on the executive and our fundraisers are in dire need of volunteers, both from members and non-members. Royal Canadian Legion executive (Rockland) P-R Trail negotiations continue The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) and VIA Trail are negotiating a new lease agreement for the old railway route and right-of-way that is now the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail. The current 10-year lease expires in 2020 and the UCPR has several points to work out with VIA for renewal of the lease, including guarantees that will support the City of Clarence-Rockland’s plans for rehabilitation and restoration of the old Bourget Train Station as a local heritage tourism feature. The UCPR wants the issues of culvert and fence maintenance and rights-of-way for neighbouring farmlands addressed in a new agreement. – Gregg Chamberlain

The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 554 Rockland and District, is proud to support our veterans, our youth and our community. Every year our branch runs a poppy cam- paign from the last Friday in October to the day before Remembrance Day inNovember. We have been very successful in getting volunteers and the community has been very generous with their donations. Over the past few years, we have collected between $12,000 and $14,000 each year for our Pop- py Trust Fund which is specifically used to support our veterans and, in special cases, support our youth such as the Air Cadets, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides (French and English). Most of the Poppy funds go to a Canada- wide “Leave the Streets Behind” program to

Some of our accomplishments have included the Afghanistan memorial stone which was added to the Cenotaph in front of City Hall last year. We have helped our veterans and their widows in numerous ways such as the Christmas visits, applying for veterans’ benefits, adding a deceased date to a head stone 10 years after his interment, and emergency funding. Our branch has also contributed funds, from the Poppy Trust, to help the victims of the Fort McMurray disaster. We have organized the Remembrance
