Nilpeter Welcomes Age Of Automation by Greg Kishbaugh T here are a number of forces at work in the flexo industry, but one thing is certain:The future of manufacturing is au- tomation. Processes need to be controllable, repeatable and, above all, capable of producing the exact same level of quality every hour of every day. Day after day after day. But it isn’t enough for companies to simply understand this dynamic, they must be forward-thinking enough to invest in

Phoenix Challenge Names Winners The 20th year of the Phoenix Chal- lenge Foundation’s High School Skills Competition took place from March 22-24.A total of 36 students, making up 18 teams, went to work to prove their skills in the various disciplines from prepress, platemaking and mounting to mathematics and written skills to print setup and press operation. this changing mar- ketplace. Because automation does not come without a great deal of invest- ment of time and training and learn- ing. And it does not come cheap. Nilpeter’s U.S. headquar ter s in Cincinnati, Ohio, re- cently underwent a $5.7 million up-

grade that fully automates its manufacturing process. The new lights out system allows the press manufacturer to guarantee the consistency of its equipment across all its manufacturing locations, which include the U.S. facility in Ohio, as well as its locations in Denmark and India. “It’s always been our vision to have seamless operations across the globe, no matter if in Europe, North America or Asia,” said Lenny DeGirolmo, President of Nilpeter USA. “This investment ensures that the quality of our presses is always the same; it doesn’t matter where it’s manufactured.”

One of the great dichotomies of modern manufac- turing and production is that oftentimes the more complex and sophisticated the technology, the easier it is for operators to use. Nilpeter’s new FA press, the first machine manufac- tured in the company’s newly upgraded facility, is a case in point. With its eye toward a changing work- force, comprised of an ever greater percentage of Millennials, the press offers complete clean hand technology operation. Incorporating some of the most advanced technologies currently available, the entire press can be run from a tablet. The press is of- fered in 14-inch and 17-inch widths; it’s a fully auto- mated triple axis servo press with gearless plate sleeves and Clean Inking solutions.

“The press is 100 percent operated by tablet,” said Paul Teachout, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “No handles, no knobs; everything is automated.Total job save a recall functions allow the first label off the machine to be as good as the last. With this press, an operator is 95 percent of where he or she needs to be before they do a single thing. This applies more science to the traditional craft of printing.” With the new automated manufacturing system, every aspect of machining is controlled with pin- point accuracy. “There is not a single thing left to chance anymore,” said Teachout. “There’s a chip in every piece of tooling to let us know when its life cycle is complete and needs to be replaced. Failures of any kind have been removed from the process.” “R&D drives this company,” said DeGirolmo.“There is research being done in Denmark at this very mo- ment that is 20 years ahead of its time.We are work- ing on technology now that will help usher in a new age of automation in the future. We are cognizant of keeping an eye on the present — supporting each and every current customer — while also keeping an Nilpeter USA President Lenny DeGirolmo ( third from left ) credits the company’s employees with its recent successes.

DuPont, Partners Present “The Virtuous Circle” Is it possible to reduce food waste, improve child- hood nutrition and promote the education around environmental sustainability all at the same time? A partnership of businesses and NGOs has been looking at this very question, and more, as part of the “The Virtuous Circle” initiative in South Africa. The key learnings from this circular economy project will be showcased during Interpack 2017 from May 4-10. The project, coordinated by DuPont in close collab- oration with Amcor, FUTURELIFE, EqualTrade4, Wild- lands, RWPA Solutions and Wastebuster among others, employs a three-pillar approach that address- es the challenge of the sustainability of multimaterial multilayer plastic packaging whilst simultaneously tackling the broader societal objectives around edu- cation and childhood nutrition. A roundtable discussion on the findings of the pro- ject and research outcomes will take place on May 8 at 4 pm in the Safe Food Pavilion at Interpack 2017. The SCIENCE of flexo rollers and sleeves Skilled flexo printers know any variation in temperature, humidity, substrates and a host of other conditions will affect the quality of their work. Cleanliness of lines, accuracy of colors and softness of shades can make or break a job. But if you want to maximize profits, you need to optimize uptime, speed and quality. The anilox rollers and sleeves in your presses are only as good as the science behind them— the technology of precision . ARC rollers and sleeves are built to exacting OEM dimensions, with cell geometries engineered for efficient ink usage and precise volumes. Target Finalizes Sustainable Packaging Goals Just weeks after releasing a new forest products policy, in which it pledges to source all of the wood, paper, paper-based and wood-based fiber used in its brand-owned products from post-consumer recycled materials and credibly certified forests, retail giant Target has announced five new sustainable packag- ing goals. “We know our guests pay attention to packaging and its impact on the environment,” said Jen Silber- man, Target’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “When we provide them with thoughtfully designed, environ- mentally friendly packaging, we’re able to help them take another step toward sustainable living.” The brand has outlined five major goals to be achieved by 2022: • Source all brand-owned paper-based packaging from sustainably managed forests by 2022. • Work to eliminate expanded polystyrene from brand-owned packaging by 2022. As part Target’s chemical policy, the retailer has committed to work- ing with suppliers and partners to find alternatives for polystyrene. • Add the How2Recycle label to all brand-owned packaging by 2020. As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, Target already uses the label on more than 1,700 of its product packages. The retailer has pledged to continue looking for way to place the label on more of its brand-owned packaging whenev- er space allows. • Support The Recycling Partnership’s mission to improve how more than 25 percent of Americans re- cycle by 2020. The company plans to help deliver more curbside recycling programs to underserved communities to increase recycling and make more recycled raw materials available for packaging. • Create more demand for recycled packaging by creating three new end markets for recycled materi- als by 2020. To educate consumers about the impor- tance of recycling, Target has joined two industry efforts —the Material Recovery Facility of the Future and Beyond 34.The Material Recovery Facility of the Future is a project working toward a vision that all packaging can be recycled, while Beyond 34, focuses on demonstrating and sharing the best practices to raise the U.S. recycling rate beyond the current rate of 34 percent. “As a leader in design, we can use our expertise to create more sustainable packaging options for our guests and help deliver products that are both better- for-you and better for the environment,”Silberman said.

places two presses, and according to company owner Nino Venezia,“it has given us a 50 percent bigger for- mat and four times the production speed.” Established in 2000 by Venezia and his wife Anita, the company is based in Venlo,The Netherlands, close to the massive AGR wholesale auction market for fresh fruit and vegetables. This generates a huge de- mand for labels that Dutch Graphic Group supplies in run lengths from 2,000 to 3 million and more.
