Stories focus on social and life skills and address relevant issues such as friendships and school. With each grade, the text length increases. (Grade 1 pictured.)

Past to Present

Using Storyworks Is as Easy as 1, 2, 3 Our lesson plans are structured around an easy-to-follow Before, During, and After Reading routine. They’re grounded in the Science of Reading, aligned to standards, and built to help teachers make the most of every instructional moment.
1 Before Reading
Kick off a lesson with an engaging video or discussion starter to hook students and build the background knowledge they need. Then teach with “Words to Know” vocabulary slideshows , giving students the explicit and essential instruction they need to step into the text with confidence.
Set a purpose for reading. Learning objectives are included with every lesson plan.
Build background knowledge with real-world videos.
Preview new vocabulary with a slideshow and audio where words are read aloud.

During Reading Research shows comprehension improves when students revisit a text, so we recommend two reads, with flexibility to adapt as needed. In the First Read , students focus on getting the gist or building a basic understanding of what the text is mostly about. In the Second Read , text‑dependent questions guide them to key details, evidence, text structure, and vocabulary to deepen comprehension.

After Reading After students have worked through the text with purpose, teachers can pull everything together. Discussion and writing help students synthesize ideas, make meaning, and show what they’ve learned in ways that feel doable and authentic. And when it’s time to check understanding , our quizzes make it simple. They’re standards‑aligned, ready to use, and give you fast, actionable insights without extra prep.
