water only . . . he shall In ho wise lose his reward” (Matt. 10:42): I cannot serve God’s people, count ing it a joy to do so, without a true, regard for God Himself. When He sees what I do, it is a token to my Lord that He is dear to me. He knows that I am on His side in a world where His friends are all too few. Therefore let me watch for opportunities of doing these little kindnesses. Let me run to help any child of God and any disciple of Jesus.—Alexander Smellie. 17. Our Lord's Secret of Victory “Therefore shall I -not be confound ed; therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed” (Isa. 50:7). The Hebrew scholar Delitsch trans lates the words “not confounded” as “not suffered myself to be overcome.” How easy it is in days like these to be fearful and apprehensive, to look around instead of looking up—in a word, to suffer oursélves to be over come! . „ . Let us come back quickly to the secret of our Lord’s own vic tory. “Therefore,” because of the quiet listening and receiving morning by morning, “therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.” —Mrs. Howard Taylor. 18. The Sweetness of His Presence “Now when they saw the "boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they Were unlearned arid -ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). ' In the old times, when-they wished to attract doves to a certain pigeon- house, they took homing birds belong ing, to that place and smeared their wings with a costly perfume, and sent ^them forth. Other pigeons were so de lighted with the sweetness that they followed them to the dove-cotes. Oh, that you and I may be so sweetened by dwelling near to Christ, that others may be attracted to Hiln to see His beauty and to know His love! —Selected, 19. Christ Lives TodayI “Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave hifnself for me” (Gal. 2:20). It was the living rod that blossomed and budded and brought forth al monds that proclaimed heaven’s true priesthood, in Aaron’s line. It is the living Christ, and not the medieval crucifix, that a struggling and sinful world needs today; and it is the Christ incarnate in living men, and the truth lived out in Christ-filled lives, that alone can meet the demands and the opportunities of this living age. —A. B. Simpson.

20. The Privilege of Prayer “ Casting all your care upon him; for he caieth for you” (1 Pet. 5:7). Oh, the joy of His forgiveness! How it thrills our hearts to know That His peace to us is given, When to Him in care we go! Peace of which the world knows noth ing, Joy unbounded, full and free. Child of God, how blest thy station, : In His loving care to be! —Clara L. Cook. 21. God's Grace in Action “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:24). God is so holy and just that He de mands the penalty of His broken law to be paid. God is so gracious that, to save us from paying it, He came forth in the person of Jesus. God in Christ went to the cross that there He might take, upon Himself the guilt of the whole human race,- and thus unveil the passion of His heart for a world of sinnersi There the penalty was fully paid, and now God is just, and yet the Justifier of those who believe in Jesus. We are justified by His blood. —Frederick P, Wood. 22. Greatness “For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work. . . . O Lord, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are-very deep” (Psa. 92:4, 5); God has a plan for our lives, and He never makes anything that is not as great .as He can make it. His plan includes great Experiences across the years, great thoughts, and great in spirations. It does require that we go by way of the cross. —W. H. Kallenbach. 23. Satisfied “Believe Ve that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord” (Matt 9:28). Note the response to the “yea.” “Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.” When the Holy Spirit ministers of the fullness of Jesus to our souls, how soon, the heart runs over! And this overflowing of the heart with the fullness of Christ is true, heavenly worship. . . . What can we do but praise, admire, adore, love, and wor-
