BUDGET PLANNING BEGINS FOR HAWKESBURY Finance department staff will do a detailed review of all the department reports, and meet as needed with any directors concer- ning specific items. The review should be done by the end of October.

Members of Hawkesbury council and municipal administration will be busy with getting the 2024 budget approved before the end of the year. Treasurer Philippe Timbers presented council October 10 with the schedule for review and discussions on the proposed 2024 municipal budget. Reports from all municipal departments on their operation and capital planning needs proposed for next year have been submitted to the finance department. A meeting between all department directors to talk about major budget items is scheduled for October 17.

Champlain Township council passed a bylaw allowing homeowners to keep hens in their backyards. The last public consultation report on the backyard hen program was reviewed during the regular meeting of Champlain Township council September 28. According to Jennifer Laforest of the Planning Department, many people are interested in the outcome of the backyard hen consultation, and a few changes were made to the final version of the bylaw based on feedback from residents. The restriction on the number of licenses based on location was removed, and the pilot project guidelines amended to require a fence around the coop. According to the results of the public consultation, the residents of Champlain Township support the inclusion of tiny homes in the neighborhood. During the regular meeting on Sep- tember 28, Champlain Township council reviewed the results of a public consultation conducted on tiny homes. The consultation was launched on July 25 of this year and was meant to gather community input and

The survey responses were generally favourable to the development of tiny homes in the township, with residents expressing the desire for allowing tiny homes as infill developments within existing neighborhoods. Tiny homes count as second dwelling units which can be installed on existing low-density residential properties. Amendments have been proposed which would allow for multiple tiny homes to be constructed on a property within a low-density residential area, which would allow council to retain oversight in the approval of tiny home communities, or “pocket neighborhoods”. There was some hesitancy among resi- dents who currently own properties that could accommodate tiny homes, indicating UIBUUIFZEPOUZFUOFFEUIFNGPSUIFNTFMWFT and that they want to maintain their privacy. Despite this, surveys indicate that these
reluctant homeowners do want to keep the right to develop a tiny home in the future, in case their family needs one. “I think what the staff report hints at is that the zoning in place is pretty permissible in terms of tiny homes,” said Jennifer Lafo- SFTUPGUIF1MBOOJOH%FQBSUNFOUi5IFSFT nothing that would prevent somebody who wanted to install tiny homes from applying and receiving approval because the policies are very supportive of adding residential infill in these areas. If council wanted to see these types of developments occur, it might have to request additional information in terms of grant funding, public awareness, and marketing. Con artists are using the good name and reputation of a well-known non-profit group for their fake charity phone call routine. The OPP have received complaints from the Hawkesbury area of Prescott-Russell about an active scam where residents re- ceive phone calls from someone claiming to represent the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The target of the phony phone call is told they have won a large amount of money and also a flat-screen television or some other item. They are given a fake name and a contact address in Toronto or some other location, along with a phone number to call to verify their alleged win. Calls to that number are answered by someone who also claims to represent the Heart and Stroke Foundation and who then tells the target of the scam what to do to claim their alleged prize. This may involve providing personal identification and financial identity information, including a bank account for transfer of the prize money. The scam depends on getting that kind of information so the fraudsters can then either remove money from the victim’s account or use the victim’s identity for credit thefts. The police have determined that if the Heart and Stroke Foundation does any kind of prize draw, they send the prize item or cheque directly to the winner and do not call a person and then direct them to another

L’Action de grâces est passée, Noël approche et tous les bénévoles de la Banque alimentaire centrale de Hawkesbury se préparent à une augmen- tation possible de la demande d’aide de la part des gens qui essaient de joindre les deux bouts avec leur budget alimentaire. «Ça va être serré», a déclaré Jeanne Char- lebois, présidente de la banque alimentaire, lors d’une entrevue téléphonique lundi. La banque alimentaire avait l’habitude de tenir des statistiques sur le nombre de familles qui venaient chercher de l’aide. Désormais, les statistiques sont basées sur les demandes individuelles d’aide pour des BEVMUFTPVEFTFOGBOUT.NF$IBSMFCPJTB fait remarquer que cette saison, la banque alimentaire de Hawkesbury elle-même s’occupe en moyenne de 700 personnes par mois qui ont besoin de quelques articles sur une base régulière ou occasionnelle. «C’est une triste situation», dit-elle. Lui survivent également plusieurs neveux et nièces. Un service religieux aura lieu le jeudi 26 octobre 2023 à 10h30 en l’église St-Jean-Baptiste à L’Orignal, suivi de l’inhumation au cimetière paroissial. La famille sera présente à l’église à compter de 9h30 afin de recevoir les condoléances. Claude Bruneau de Hawkesbury est décédé soudainement le 10 septembre 2023 à l’âge de 68 ans. Il était le tendre époux de Lucie Cadieux; le fils de feu Henri Bruneau et de feu Jeannine Martel; le père adoré de Muriel Mawdsley (née Cadieux-Bruneau) (Jason), Vincent Cadieux- Bruneau (Josée); le grand-père chéri de Justin, Aleksei, Mikaël, Anabel et Catherine; le frère de feu André (Monique), de feu Michel. Lui survivent plusieurs beaux-frères, belles-sœurs, cousins, cousines, neveux, nièces et amis. Un mari, un père et grand-père fier, aimant, taquin et protecteur; nous garderons le souvenir d’un homme attentionné, passionné de la musique et bon vivant. La famille invite parents et amis samedi le 28 octobre 2023 de 11hrs à 13hrs pour une célébration de vie au Centre Culturel le Chenail, 2 rue John, Hawkesbury.
