A company built on diversity and inclusion

We encourage cooperation and teamwork, providing fair, ethical treatment of all employees. This commitment is also true in the provision of services to our clients. The firm is committed to developing and implementing best practice in equality, diversity and inclusion as employers; providers of legal services; purchasers of goods and services; and in their wider role in the community. All employees, and those acting on behalf of the firm, are required to adhere to the firm’s equality and diversity policy which covers employees, clients and third-party suppliers. Although we recognise that we have more work to do, we are proud of the progress we have made over the last few years. The firm has signed up to the Law Society Equality and Diversity Charter. Slater Heelis recognise that everyone is unique. As a business, we believe that embracing diversity is key to success. We want to create a culture where a diverse group of people can bring the best of themselves to their careers, to build an environment where everyone feels supported and where difference is valued. Our aim is to help remove some of the social barriers to joining our business, either as a lawyer or in any of the support functions, to ensure we attract the best talent from all backgrounds. Living Wage Employer

Slater Heelis has joined the movement of over 7,000 responsible employers across the UK who voluntarily commit to paying the real Living Wage to our staff and our regular contractors. The real Living Wage is the only rate calculated according to the costs of living. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers who wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. We are delighted to have been given accreditation as a Living Wage Employer, ensuring wages will never be lower than the independent benchmark set by the Living Wage Foundation. At Slater Heelis, we recognise that paying the real Living Wage is the mark of a responsible employer.

The Coronavirus pandemic has had a profound impact on the way we work and engage in business. A majority of our employees started working from home, and most haven’t looked back. We embrace this change as it empowers our staff in allowing them to work where and how is most suited for them. Equally, we get the best out of our staff because they are happy and are able to strike that work-life balance just right. We will usually detail if our jobs are home, offi ce based or some form of hybrid. Just talk to us about your requirements and we will take all requests seriously. Working from home or the offi ce

The fi rm was very encouraging of my ambitions to qualify as a solicitor, and provided a clear route to achieving this, along with funding for the Legal Practice Course. The partners and senior management at Slater Heelis demonstrated their interest and support in my progression by actively encouraging it, and being genuinely friendly and approachable. I have been consistently supported by knowledgeable and helpful colleagues at all levels, and would thoroughly recommend Slater Heelis as a fi rm that will support you at every stage from training to qualifi cation, and beyond. I started my legal career at Slater Heelis in 2016 as a paralegal in the Family department. Immediately I was given challenging work and encouraged to take a hands-on approach. This was quite different to the experiences I was aware that friends and acquaintances had at other fi rms. What our staff say David Wilkinson, Solicitor

I started as a solicitor in the Court of Protection team in May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mohima Miah, Solicitor

Starting a new job in the middle of lockdown isn’t the best way to embark on a new role. Despite that, team morale was really uplifting and everyone made me feel so welcome during this diffi cult time. The team at Slater Heelis really go above and beyond caring about clients; it is not just a fi le for us to deal with. I love looking after my clients, so working with a team that has the same ethos as I do reassures me that this is the right fi rm for me.

Jay Lafi nhan, Partner

During my time at the fi rm, I have been given a lot of opportunities to go out and win new work and promote the fi rm, which has helped me carve out my own niche within the department. Whilst a lot of fi rms pay lip service to the work-life balance and having a family atmosphere, these are core values of Slater Heelis which is refl ected and actively encouraged by senior management and resonates throughout the fi rm. I joined Slater Heelis as an Associate in the Commercial Property team in September 2015. I was made a Partner in April 2018 and was supported by senior partners in my department during the partnership application process.

Prior to joining the Marketing team here I had worked across a variety of industries, but never legal. I have picked up all sorts of useful knowledge to apply in my own life, and have heard some incredible stories of the people our colleagues have worked with. This job is far from dull! The people I work with are supportive, understanding and want the best for each other, which makes even the diffi cult bits of the job manageable! I am proud to be an LGBT+ Champion, working in allyship towards inclusivity in our communications and processes alike. I joined Slater Heelis as the Digital Marketing Executive in January 2020 and within days I knew I had made the right decision. Laura Waldron, Digital Marketing Executive
