sin; but when he comes to a knowledge of the truth,, he delights to do" the - will of God. How well it pays to follow the Lord of light. He leads us into green pastures, Psa. 23:2. He keeps our feet from falling, Psa. 56:13. We are the children of light, 1 Thess. 5:5, and will go all the way with our Lord into the glory of the endless age. What terrible words are those which He utters: "i go my way and ye shall die in your sins, and whither I go ye cannot come." Verse 20. There is a nation different from all nations—the Jews—chosen by God that He may reveal Himself to them and through them; there is a Man differ- ent f r om all men, the Lord from heaven, Jesus the son of David, the Son of God, Messiah of Israel, and Head of the Church; and there is a Book different from all other books, the record of God's deal- ings with Israel, culminating in the mani- festation of the Redeemer whose goings forth are from of old, even from everlast- ing. The same Spirit of God convinces us of the supremacy' of Christ and of the supremacy of Scripture. And accordingly we find that as. the hearts of men are at- tracted by Jesus Christ as, the only Pro- phet, Priest and . King, their minds are filled with reverence and love for the Scripture. Higher than the Bible is—not reason, not the Church, not the Christian con- sciousness—but the Holy Spirit, who re- veals Christ i n ' the written Word, so that it becomes to us, what it truly is, the Word of God, the voice of the Beloved. ' ' Martin Luther asks, ' ' What Book and what P e r s o n ?" " T h e re is only one B o o k ," is his reply, " Scripture ; and only one Person—Jesus Ch r i s t ." There subsists an essential and vita' connection between the eternal Word of God, who in the fulness of time was made flesh and dwelt among us, revealing the Father and bringing salvation, even eter- nal life, to the sinful children of men, and that written Word which testifies of Him. of His person and work, of His sufferings and glory. It is impossible for us to un- derstand the nature of Scripture, unless we view it in relation to the Son of God. the Messiah of Israel, the Redeemer of God's people; for He is the center and kernel of the inspired record. . .''.-• . . . The history. of Jesus does not begin with His birth in Bethlehem. The first verse of Matthew sums up the Old Testament history; nor can thè sequel of the Gospels, Epistles and Apocalypse be understood without it. His goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.
