familiarize police recruits with people that may have divergent cultures from their own. The targeted implementation for the committee is April 2017. Career Development FWPD is currently implementing the following career development programs: Career Mentor Program FWPD places an emphasis on leadership development in addition to partnerships with the community. The training division began a training enhancement with the “Two-Tier Leadership Development Program,” to guide officers as they seek to ascend in rank. FWPD empowers employees to demonstrate leadership at every level of the organization and to enhance their career paths through self-initiative. As such, FWPD developed a Career Mentor list provided to all officers containing mentor contact information for each unit within the department. This tool guides employees in obtaining information about units in which they may have interest and wish to experience. Mentors accept inquiries such as how to prepare for a unit, special requirements, or training necessary for high performance in a unit, and general questions about how units function assists employees in making career path decisions. Two-Tier Leadership Development Program The Department is implementing a two-tier professional development model, which will provide newly promoted and tenured supervisors of all ranks with the prerequisite knowledge and skills required to perform their duties. This training includes mentoring training, conflict prevention and resolution skills, emotional intelligence, basic budget training, and tenets of succession planning. The first tier of this training, which is Supervisory Liability, is mandatory for all sergeants, and focuses on reducing risk factors associated with negligence, deliberate indifference, and faulty training. Promotees will complete the online training within three months of promotion to their first supervisory rank. This subsequent Supervisory Liability training is online course by FBI-LEEDA, and attendees are able to resume their normal duties throughout the duration of the course. The next tier of training is meritorious/qualification based, and those chosen will earn enrollment upon selection through a competitive process. Such training will include the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP), Southern Police Institute (SPI), FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, as well as various training courses offered through professional and academic partnerships that exhibit best practices in law enforcement leadership and management. The goal of all training is to facilitate collaboration with other professionals, to study and assess crime trends, enhance police practices, and to establish and maintain liaisons with citizen groups and business organizations in an effort to understand and reduce crime and the fear of crime. Both tiers of training support, promote, and maintain the necessary personal and professional leadership development advancements expected of professional law enforcement practitioners.
