Professionalizing the Ranks

Recognizing superior service and professionalism begins with training, the Fort Worth Police Department has and/or will:

 Implemented de-escalation training in the scenario based training as identified in the principles of Procedural Justice.  Created an Agile Leadership Series for the Rank of Sergeant as a personal development program to include a focus on communication, conflict management, leadership by example, managing difficult employees, team building, agile learning, 360 reviews, and executive coaching by TCU professors, leadership assessments, and mentoring. 

The implementation of Harassment training will be October 2016, across all ranks after instructors receive training. This class will focus on General Orders, Title 7 Offenses, preventing a hostile work environment, and understanding harassment and sexual harassment.  Initiating Ethics training October 1, 2016, across all ranks after instructors have received training.  Offering Conflict management for supervisors and above, on October 1, 2016.  Managing a diverse team for supervisors and above will be implemented in October 1, 2016.  De-escalating situations in the workplace will be implemented in October 2016.  Body language/communication will be implemented October 2016.  Multi-Generational workplace training will be implemented upon finding an instructor for the course. Expected start date is no later than January 2017.  Networking 101 will be implemented upon finding an instructor for the course. Expected start date is no later than January 2017.  Leadership 101 for the rank of corporal and also for FTO’s as a continuing education quarterly training will be implemented in October 2016.  Self-awareness will be implemented in October 2016.  Stress management and self-care will be implemented upon finding an instructor. Expected date is no later than January 2017.  A mandatory cross cultural sensitivity training course (in-service) across all ranks designed to alleviate inter-departmental tension, improve communication, and foster goodwill among all employees. This training will begin no later than April 2017.  The FWPD is working with TCU to offer a management track development course for officers. Officers will have the option of earning a professional certificate after the successful completion of 12 graduate college credits or pursuing a master’s degree fromTCU in criminal justice and criminology. The courses will be tailored to the needs of practitioners with input from officers on their unique needs in order to be successful in their careers. The expected start date is Fall 2017.
