JULY 2018

A FAMILY TRADITION

A Celebration Filled with Good Food and Family

For my family and me, one of the greater celebrations in the year happens to be in July. Every year, we throw a July Christmas party, where the whole family can spend time together and participate in fun activities. The main reason why we’ve created this family tradition is because of how far away we live from one another. Most of my family lives in the Dallas, Texas, area. Getting up there multiple times a year can be rough. Other than in July, we try to gather together as a family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, the holidays are only six weeks apart, and while I enjoy spending time with my family, gathering everyone twice within such a short time is a little silly. Throwing our Christmas party in July gives enough of a gap between holidays that we can look forward to seeing each other when the time comes, but it also gives us time to relax at home. For our July Christmas party, we don’t bring any presents — we save that for December 25. Our party is held either at my house or my great Aunt Alice and Uncle Glenn’s house. Everyone tries to bring something to the event; there’s always a lot of cooking

and good food. My cousin owns and runs a food truck, so he usually brings all sorts of barbecue foods that everyone looks forward to, such as briskets, ribs, sausages, and coleslaw. Since I like to bake, I spend a lot of time making cheesecakes, pecan pies, sugar cookies with royal ice cream, fudge cake, and homemade cinnamon rolls. Out of everything I’ve ever baked, my cinnamon rolls are the most popular and usually the first to go. “We hang up stockings with the stars and stripes on them and fill them with candy and sparklers for all of the kids.” “

and sparklers for all of the kids. Although they may not get presents, we always give them treats during the party. Instead of scheduling the event for Independence Day weekend, we prefer to hold it the weekend after for convenience — everyone generally has plans for the Fourth they don’t want to miss. My family typically spends the day at Grapevine Lake boating and jet-skiing, then we head downtown when it’s dark to watch the traditional pyrotechnics at work. I hope you look forward to spending time with your family this month. Whether it’s a family tradition or a spur-of-the-moment decision, take some time to spend with your loved ones. Celebratory

times like these create wonderful memories for everyone and leave positive,

While the party might not be a traditional Christmas celebration, we decorate with both Christmas and Independence Day in mind. We hang up stockings with the stars and stripes on them and fill them with candy

long-lasting impressions.

Where Essential Oils Come From SOURCING THE SWEET-SMELLING STUFF

Call it a pseudoscientific fad or a medical revolution; either way, essential oils are more popular today than they have ever been. Though research on the efficacy of lavender, ginger, and the dozens of other sweet-smelling oils is conflicting at best, people are using them at an astonishing rate. In fact, according to Stratistics MRC, essential oils were a $5.91 billion industry in 2016 and are expected to reach $12.85 billion by 2023. Whether you’re an essential oil acolyte or you fly into a rage at the faintest hint of bergamot, your mind is probably already made up about aromatherapy. The question remains, though: Where does all this delicious- smelling stuff come from? Most essential oils are derived from a process called steam distillation . Soon after harvest, the plants are placed on a mesh inside a sealed still, into which steam is injected. As the steam rises and envelops the plant, it breaks it down and lifts its constituent components up through a tube and into a condenser. The condenser cools the resulting vapor and collects it in liquid form at the bottom. Since essential oils do not mix with water, they float on the surface, where

they’re siphoned off, bottled, and shipped off to a distributor. There are other methods, such as expression (aka cold pressing), but because steam distillation is so easy to do, most essential oils you see on the shelf will have gone through this process. Lavender essential oil is harvested from sheaves of lavandula angustifolia , that purple herb you see all over gardens across the United States. There are lavender farms all over the world, from California to Japan to Brazil, but the biggest world producer of lavender is, interestingly, Bulgaria. Tea Tree oil comes from the leaves of melaleuca alternifolia , commonly known as narrow-leaved paperbark, a short, bushy tree that produces white, fluffy flowers in the spring. The trees are endemic to Australia, but today are usually farmed in New South Wales or Queensland. Bergamot is distilled from the peels of lime-green bergamot oranges, or citrus bergamia . Most of it comes from coastal areas around the Ionian Sea. Whatever you do with it, use it sparingly on your skin — it can amplify skin damage from the sun!

back pain, and sciatica. Our physical therapists explain each injury — what it is, what causes it, and how it can be treated. Then they demonstrate how different exercises and stretches can address and treat the injury. Our physical therapists then walk attendees through the expected treatment process for each injury and show what Premier Rehab PT offers. Our goal is to help all of our patients get back to their healthy lives. Attending these workshops can help you get an idea of what you’re going through and allow you to connect with a physical therapist. Not too long ago, we hosted a workshop on vertigo at the North Richland Hills location. Those who attended learned what vertigo is, what the symptoms are, and how we treat it. It was a huge success, and afterward, many of the attendees

RUN 4 ELISE Spreading Safety and Knowledge

Recently, Premier Rehab PT was involved in a 5K run that supported a local cause. By participating in the event, we helped shed light on the importance of water safety and provided information to our community about who we are and what we do. The foundation and run, named Run4Elise, was founded to spread awareness about water safety and drowning. Elise was a 13-year-old who loved swimming, and she competed fiercely and fervently in the sport. In 2016, she drowned during warm-ups at her swimming club practice, devastating her parents, her team, coaches, and anyone who was close to her. Yet her passion lives on. Elise’s drive and love for swimming, her positive attitude, and her hardworking nature motivated many people both in and outside of her swim team. To spread her love for the sport and the importance of pool safety, her parents created the Swim4Elise Foundation. The first race, held in 2017, including the 5K and mile run, raised over $50,000.

At Premier Rehab, we’re proud to have volunteered for and sponsored this organization that strives to create a better and safer environment for all. Angela Leslie, Brad Stuckey, Lori Day, Michael Teague, David Benson, and Linda Downs were the staff members who braved the cold weather and made sure to answer any questions that were asked at the table we ran. They gave attendees tips on stretching both before and after the race and gave out information regarding special programs we offer through our clinic. When we at Premier Rehab PT get involved in our community, we do it full-force. We spread safety awareness and provide high-quality physical therapy guidance. For more information regarding Run4Elise, be sure to check out their website at swim4elise.com . To learn more about what our services can do for you, visit us at premierrehab.org.

Battling the Summer Sun!

HOWMUCH SUNSHINE IS TOO MUCH? Keep Your Family Safe

To many people, summer is all about heading outside to enjoy the weather. But getting too much sun can be dangerous. To have a fun-filled summer with your family this year, remember that it’s essential to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.

damage. When your skin tone changes due to the sun, regardless of whether it tans or turns red, it’s a result of the epidermis reacting to damage caused by UV rays. Both are symptoms of harmed skin. While vitamin D is important, the sun does not contribute to its creation as much as you might think. Doris Day, a New York City dermatologist, explains that if your skin were to constantly produce vitamin D from being in the sun, it would reach toxic levels. Vitamin D is the only vitamin that your body can produce on its own, through a common form of cholesterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol. Spending time in the sun does help vitamin D form, but you need far less exposure than you think.

COVER UP Covering your skin is one of the best ways to avoid skin damage. Wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants or skirts can protect your skin from direct exposure to UV rays. While this tactic protects you from the sun, it offers poor defense against the heat. So, if you opt for cooler attire, it’s important to cover all exposed skin with a copious amount of sunscreen. Be sure to reapply every two hours for maximum skin protection. SPEND LESS TIME IN THE SUN If you’re planning to spend a significant amount of time in the sun, consider your environment.

Will there be plenty of shade? Will you have to bring your own? What’s the best way to step out of the sun for a few minutes? Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing are great ways to shield yourself from UV rays, but it’s important to avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods. Taking a break from the sun gives your body the time it needs to recuperate and helps prevent sunburn and heatstroke.

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT SUN EXPOSURE

Many people think that a tan is better than a sunburn, but the result of tanning is still sun

Knowing how to protect yourself from UV rays is the first step to having a safe, fun-filled summer!
