ICPF Renewing Focus On Packaging Education BY SUSAN RILEY

TRG Acquires Innovative Fiber

Chicago, Illinois based The Royal Group (TRG) has announced the acquisition of Franklin, Wisconsin based Innovative Fiber, a premier solutions provider in the corrugated industry offering customized traditional packaging and patented, sustainable solutions for the food processing and food service industries. The deal was effective March 31, 2023. “We are thrilled to add Innovative Fiber to our team at TRG,” said Kevin Miller, Presi- dent and CEO. “The Covelli family and their talented employees have built a wonderful company that thrives on responsiveness, in- novation, and impeccable customer service. Their strong customer base and location in Wisconsin will immediately make TRG a bet- ter company. We look forward to building on their strong foundation and further entrench- ing ourselves in the Wisconsin market.” Innovative Fiber is the 18th manufactur- ing facility and 38th TRG location nationwide. This acquisition supports TRG’s strategic fo- cus centered around growth, innovation, and people. “We’re delighted to welcome Innovative Fiber to the TRG family. We look forward to ex-

Corrugated packaging is the right choice for a sustainable planet, and it’s also a great pick for a rewarding career. But how many of the coun- try’s next-generation workers have the unique world of corrugated packaging in their sights? Are they even aware that it is an option? The International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) has worked with colleges and universities for years to help educate stu-

dents and faculty about the corrugated packaging industry. Recently, it was announced that ICPF will renew its efforts by investing even more Aspiring engineering students from Waterford Union High School in Wiscon- sin take part in a corrugated boat design competition sponsored by Innova- tive Fiber and Independence Corrugated. To start, it is reconnecting with its education partners and seeking their feedback on strengthening industry messaging to attract the next generation of talent. “I think that one of the biggest challenges that we face is that stu- dents at all levels don’t know about the industry,” said Caitlin Salaver- ria, Director of Marketing and Communications at the Fibre Box Associ- ation, and soon-to-be official President of the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) in July following the retirement of Richard Flaherty. The Production Index reading of 47.8 percent is a 0.5-percentage point in- crease compared to February's figure of 47.3 percent. The Prices Index registered 49.2 percent, down 2.1 percentage points compared to the February figure of 51.3 percent. “The Backlog of Orders Index registered 43.9 percent, 1.2 percentage points lower than the February reading of 45.1 percent. The Employment Index continued in con- traction territory, registering 46.9 percent, down 2.2 per- centage points from February's reading of 49.1 percent. The Supplier Deliveries Index figure of 44.8 percent is 0.4 percentage point lower than the 45.2 percent recorded in February; this is the index's lowest reading since March 2009 (43.2 percent). “The Inventories Index dropped into contraction at 47.5 percent, 2.6 percentage points lower than the February reading of 50.1 percent. Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contract- ed in March for the fifth consecutive month following a 28-month period of growth, say the nation's supply ex- ecutives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Busi- ness. The report was issued last week by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Manage- ment (ISM) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee: “The March Manufacturing PMI registered 46.3 percent, 1.4 percentage points lower than the 47.7 percent record- ed in February. Regarding the overall economy, this figure indicates a fourth month of contraction after a 30-month period of expansion. The Manufacturing PMIis at its lowest level since May 2020, when it registered 43.5 percent. “The New Orders Index remained in contraction terri-

reading of 47.6 percent is 2.3 percentage points lower than February's figure of 49.9 percent. The Imports Index continued in contraction territory at 47.9 percent, 2 per- centage points below the 49.9 percent re- ported in February. “The U.S. manufacturing sector contract- ed again, with the Manufacturing PMI® de- clining compared to the previous month. With Business Survey Committee panelists reporting softening new order rates over the previous 10 months, the March composite index reading reflects companies continu- ing to slow outputs to better match demand for the first half of 2023 and prepare for growth in the late summer/early fall period. Demand eased, with the (1) New Orders In- dex contracting at a faster rate, (2) New Ex- port Orders Index still below 50 percent and declining, (3) Customers' Inventories Index entering the high end of a 'just right' level, a negative for future production and (4) Back- log of Orders Index sagging again and con- tinuing in contraction. “The Employment Index continued in contraction after two months of marginal ex- pansion, and the Production Index logged a fourth month in contraction territory, though at a slightly lower rate. Panelists' comments now indicate equal levels of activity toward expanding and contracting head counts at their companies, amid mixed sentiment about the return of growth early in the sec- ond half of the year. Inputs — defined as supplier deliveries, inventories, prices and imports — continue to accommodate future demand growth. The Supplier Deliveries Index indicated faster deliveries, and the CONTINUED ON PAGE 40

EAM-Mosca's Randy Wright To Retire After 30+ Years

After devoting more than three decades of his career to EAM-Mosca, Ran- dy Wright, Vice President of Corrugated Industry Sales, announced that he will be transitioning into retirement over the next year. As he reflects

on time spent with the company, he acknowledges that his career has been highly rewarding. Retracing his journey over these past 30+ years also highlights sig- nificant moments of achievement for the company since its inception occurring only a few years prior to bringing Wright on board.

Over the past 30 years, Wright served in a handful of roles, pro- moting from Regional Sales Man- ager and National Sales Manager to Vice President of Corrugated In- dustry Sales. During this time, Wright stepped up to challenges and addressed the growing pains of a company that initially only manufactured inline and offline bundlers. The limited product offering may seem unusual for a company that has grown into a global supplier of strapping equipment. However, upon EAM’s inception, the founders had no plans for offering bundlers or any other type of strapping equipment. Instead, Dierk Wessel, Bob Leighton, and Hartmut Boellmann planned to run a marketing service, supporting European companies as they entered U.S. markets. But their indelible, positive reputations amongst both consumers and suppliers in the strap- ping industry quickly pulled them back in. In July 1992, EAM-Mosca hired Wright, who had already spent 10 years in the industry, as a Regional Sales Manager to help manage its rapidly scaling operations and burgeoning demand. Both sides knew right away that this was a great fit. By 2002, Wright had received a promotion to National Sales Manager as the company continued to expand. Throughout his time at the com- pany, there’s always been “a dedication at Mosca to innovate and be the very best, and sometimes that costs more, so we seldom are the lowest cost solution from the initial investment, but we offer the best value.” This is what makes EAM-Mosca unique. As a privately-owned compa- ny, it did not need to contend with bottom-line pressures from sharehold- ers, as is often the case for publicly owned companies. Because of that freedom, Wright explains that “the attitude that came from the ownership was always customer-focused and included the support to solve prob- lems and to come up with great solutions.” For this reason, Wright found his work especially rewarding, and as a result, he never gave attention to opportunities outside the company. When it became clear that his role as National Sales Manager would be better served by moving to company headquarters, staying with EAM was never in question. Three years after his promotion, he relocated to Penn- sylvania. Less than ten years after promoting to National Sales Manager, Wright was asked to serve as Vice President of Corrugated Industry Sales, mark- ing another milestone for the company, which had grown from operations CONTINUED ON PAGE 14 Randy Wright

EAM-Mosca's Wright (CONT’D FROM PAGE 12)

Wright is now envisioning a retirement full of both do- mestic and international travel, and he’s looking forward to the possibility of trips spanning several weeks at a time. “As much as we all at EAM-Mosca wish Randy a long, happy, well-deserved retirement, we will miss having him as a key member of our team immensely. Our great suc-

that dabbled in strapping systems in the 1990s to a globally recognized and strapping systems supplier by 2010. “Randy’s long-term involvement with the corrugated industry made him an invaluable resource in the compa- ny’s effort to develop industry leading solutions for end of line process automation” says Dierk Wessel, founder of EAM-Mosca. As he tapers down over the next year, Wright will miss the people he’s worked with for years. He’ll miss the walls within the company headquarters and colleagues who made his job “much easier than it could have been.” He will also miss the clients with whom he developed close relationships over several decades. While change is inevi- table, he’s working hard to reassure clients that those rela- tionships couldn’t be left in more competent hands. Jimmy Dodd and Michael Murphy are transitioning into Wright’s role with shared responsibilities as Directors of National Accounts-Corrugated. Both Dodd and Murphy have a long history at EAM-Mosca and understand the company, the industry, and the product line. Dan Covert, who has been with the company for 28+ years, most re- cently as Product Manager for all unitizers, will also be tak- ing on more responsibilities handling all larger corrugated bundling systems in addition to all unitizers as Director of Capital Projects-Corrugated. Wright will continue taking on special projects as needed.

cess and growth as a supplier to the corrugated industry are directly correlated to the significant and countless number of contributions that Randy has made to our busi- ness,” says Edward Martin, EVP of Sales and Marketing. “I believe most of us want a career where we can look back and say that we made a meaningful difference in what we did. Suffice it to say that Randy made a big difference at EAM-Mosca and has been instrumental in helping us con- tribute to the success of our customer base.” From left, Mike Murphy, Jimmy Dodd, and Dan Covert.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Peachtree Wins Print Excellence Bronze Awards For Graphic Boxes Lawrenceville, Georgia based Peachtree Packaging & Dis- play announced it was awarded two 2023 Print Excellence Awards from the Graphic Media Alliance (GMA). Peachtree won two bronze awards in packaging for a SuperChef® Frying Oil graphic box for Chefler Foods and an ICEE® Slush graphic box for Big Easy Blends.

"We are thrilled to have our work recognized by our peers and the Graphic Media Alliance," said Chad Wagner, CEO of Peachtree Packaging & Display. "We often say that companies trust us as brand caretak- ers to produce products that reflect their high standards. Awards like this reinforce that we are delivering on that promise." The Print Excellence Awards are organized by the Graphic Media Alliance, a membership organization serv- ing around 300 commercial printing companies and sup- pliers. They accepted entries between September 1 and November 30, 2022 in more than 36 categories of graphic printing. The GMA said that the level of competition was so fierce this year that several categories required the judges to search for minor imperfections to determine a winner. The judges were highly impressed with the quality demon- strated in this year's contest and look forward to participat- ing in the 2024 competition. "The Print Excellence Awards showcases our finest of- ferings…and this year did not disappoint," said GMA Presi- dent Andrew Schall. "As demonstrated in this year's contest, our members continue to innovate, ensuring a bright future for our in- dustry and our association." Peachtree was honored with the other winners during the GMA's annual Print Week, held at multiple locations across the US in March.

Peachtree's projects were chosen from more than 440 entries in the packaging category, which included single cartons and containers, or an integrated series of packag- es sold as a single unit. The category further included folding cartons, flexible packaging, and corrugated packaging samples.

“I really do believe that once we can expose them to the corrugated packaging industry and highlight the many, many benefits like job stability, growth opportunities, our sustainable mindset and the feeling of community that comes with working in our industry, that’s going to go a long way to spark their interest.” Packaging Curricula & Social Media Presence Salaverria has provided information on ICPF’s many programs including its soon-to-be updated online corru- gated curricula, career portal and newly active social me- dia accounts on LinkedIn and Instagram. ICPF’s curricula encompasses many facets of the industry including its his- tory, production, design, performance specifications, and testing.

The curricula and social media accounts will also teach them the value of corrugated packaging and why it is a quality product that keeps packaging and its contents in- tact as well as being renewable, recyclable, and environ- mentally friendly which is top of mind for many Generation Zers. Recent studies show that climate change and the en- vironment is among their highest concerns. Machine Learning Salaverria said that ICPF continues to work on placing packaging equipment, software, and other resources at educational institutions to help create an enriching learn- ing environment for students interested in the industry. Most recently, ICPF helped the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Pack- aging Engineering Program acquire a Kongsberg X24 pro- totyping table which will offer hands-on learning opportu- nities for UF/IFAS Packaging Engineering students. Over the years, ICPF has contributed more than $12.5 million in equipment including CAD systems, sample ta- bles, testing systems, presses, rotary die cutters, stackers, dryers and related equipment to colleges and universities. Skilled Workers Expansion is key to making a difference when it comes to industry recruitment, Salaverria said. Over the coming Will it float? Here is where you can watch a video of the event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULQoX7UthBQ In Texas, Harris Packaging and American Carton Co. have been longtime supporters of packaging education through the AICC’s Emerging Leaders Program, ICPF, and the University of Texas at Arlington. The companies’ CEO and Co-owner, Jana Harris, who is also AICC Chairwoman, said that she is very excited that ICPF and AICC are work- ing together to improve curricula that is being offered to the schools, noting that UTA already has ICPF’s curricula.

years, ICPF will focus on improving industry education at two-year colleges and trade schools, high schools and even at the middle school level. ICPF also will be working to establish relationships with local governments and apprenticeship programs. Recently,

Salaverria has been in touch with the Illinois Chapter of SkillsUSA, a part- nership of students, teachers, and industry to help support a national skilled workforce. It offers technical education and competitions that support career and technical educa- tion in the classroom.

“Everyone has challenges attract- ing the next generation worker, es- pecially right now,” Harris said. “ICPF has done a great job by partnering with colleges across the US to edu- cate them on our industry and give students the tools to learn about cor- rugated design. Our company has

“They have a wonderful apprenticeship opportunity that Illinois plants in the industry will be able to take ad- vantage of,” she said. Getting Involved Many companies are heavily involved in reaching out to students in their region to tout the benefits of a packaging career. Salaverria said that in November, Wisconsin-based companies Innovative Fiber and Independence Corrugat- ed hosted a group of 15 aspiring high school engineers on tours of their facilities and sponsored a competition to design and construct a boat out of corrugated that needed to float in a swimming pool. So pleased with the outcome, the school has asked if they could make it a yearly event.

hired many students from our local university, UTA, that ICPF partners with. Our investment in ICPF over the years has brought our company value.” Getting involved with the local schools is a great way for box plants to get the word out; seize any opportunity they give you to be on campus and interact with the stu- dents, Harris said. “We’ve participated in job fairs at our local STEM high school as well as having rotating interns from that school

each semester,” Harris said. “We speak every semester at business week at our local college and we also participate in PPC’s TICCIT interactive program to educate the ele- mentary-aged students about our industry.” Harris said that she is currently talking to a two-year technical school that is interested and her local STEM high school now has access to AICC’s online courses. “They will be reviewing them over the summer and im- plementing some of our courses in some of their existing classes,” she said. “I’m very optimistic and eager to see how that works out.” With the relationship Harris has fostered with UTA, she said it has been easier to find engineers, designers, and office professionals than technical and trade workers. “Plant floor seems to be the biggest challenge,” she said. “I'm hopeful that as we build upon our newer rela- tionships with the high schools, STEM and two-year trade schools we will have some success stories to share.” A Template For Success Through the work of Harris, Innovative Fiber, Indepen- dence Corrugated and others like them, Salaverria said that ICPF can create recruitment templates and case stud- ies to be available for use by all industry companies. ICPF will also provide additional resources including videos, fact sheets and testimonials to aid in conversations and promote a unified message about the many benefits and opportunities associated with choosing a career in corru- gated packaging, she said. Making boxes may not sound that interesting to pro- spective employees compared to other careers out there, even though there are some great jobs available in the packaging and carton industries. It’s one of the reasons why Harris likes to bring in her younger employees who recently graduated to speak to them. “They seem to connect well with the audience and the students can relate,” she said. Bobst Launches New Corporate Video Mex Switzerland based Bobst recently launched its latest corporate video, showcasing its diverse portfolio of equip- ment for the packaging industry. “Bobst prides itself as an innovator and a trusted part- ner providing our customers with peace of mind earned through decades of performance, and an established leader in every packaging category: folding carton, flexible packaging, labels, and corrugated board,” says Jean-Pas- cal Bobst, CEO. “We’ll continue doing what we do best by building and supporting the end-to-end solutions that shape the future of our industry, so that our customers can do what they do best by providing excellence in labels and packaging, now and into the future.” Visit bobst.com to watch the video.
