TRG Acquires Innovative Fiber
Chicago, Illinois based The Royal Group (TRG) has announced the acquisition of Franklin, Wisconsin based Innovative Fiber, a premier solutions provider in the corrugated industry offering customized traditional packaging and patented, sustainable solutions for the food processing and food service industries. Recently, it was announced that ICPF will renew its efforts by investing even more Aspiring engineering students from Waterford Union High School in Wiscon- sin take part in a corrugated boat design competition sponsored by Innova- tive Fiber and Independence Corrugated. To start, it is reconnecting with its education partners and seeking their feedback on strengthening industry messaging to attract the next generation of talent. “I think that one of the biggest challenges that we face is that stu- dents at all levels don’t know about the industry,” said Caitlin Salaver- ria, Director of Marketing and Communications at the Fibre Box Associ- ation, and soon-to-be official President of the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) in July following the retirement of Richard Flaherty. The Prices Index registered 49.2 percent, down 2.1 percentage points compared to the February figure of 51.3 percent. “The Backlog of Orders Index registered 43.9 percent, 1.2 percentage points lower than the February reading of 45.1 percent. The Employment Index continued in con- traction territory, registering 46.9 percent, down 2.2 per- centage points from February's reading of 49.1 percent. Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contract- ed in March for the fifth consecutive month following a 28-month period of growth, say the nation's supply ex- ecutives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Busi- ness. The report was issued last week by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Manage- ment (ISM) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee: “The March Manufacturing PMI registered 46.3 percent, 1.4 percentage points lower than the 47.7 percent record- ed in February. Regarding the overall economy, this figure indicates a fourth month of contraction after a 30-month period of expansion. The Manufacturing PMIis at its lowest level since May 2020, when it registered 43.5 percent. “The New Orders Index remained in contraction terri-

Panelists' comments now indicate equal levels of activity toward expanding and contracting head counts at their companies, amid mixed sentiment about the return of growth early in the sec- ond half of the year. Inputs — defined as supplier deliveries, inventories, prices and imports — continue to accommodate future demand growth. EAM-Mosca's Randy Wright To Retire After 30+ Years
After devoting more than three decades of his career to EAM-Mosca, Ran- dy Wright, Vice President of Corrugated Industry Sales, announced that he will be transitioning into retirement over the next year. As he reflects
on time spent with the company, he acknowledges that his career has been highly rewarding. Retracing his journey over these past 30+ years also highlights sig- nificant moments of achievement for the company since its inception occurring only a few years prior to bringing Wright on board.

Over the past 30 years, Wright served in a handful of roles, pro- moting from Regional Sales Man- ager and National Sales Manager to Vice President of Corrugated In- dustry Sales. During this time, Wright stepped up to challenges and addressed the growing pains of a company that initially only manufactured inline and offline bundlers. The limited product offering may seem unusual for a company that has grown into a global supplier of strapping equipment. However, upon EAM’s inception, the founders had no plans for offering bundlers or any other type of strapping equipment. Instead, Dierk Wessel, Bob Leighton, and Hartmut Boellmann planned to run a marketing service, supporting European companies as they entered U.S. markets. But their indelible, positive reputations amongst both consumers and suppliers in the strap- ping industry quickly pulled them back in. In July 1992, EAM-Mosca hired Wright, who had already spent 10 years in the industry, as a Regional Sales Manager to help manage its rapidly scaling operations and burgeoning demand. Both sides knew right away that this was a great fit. By 2002, Wright had received a promotion to National Sales Manager as the company continued to expand. Throughout his time at the com- pany, there’s always been “a dedication at Mosca to innovate and be the very best, and sometimes that costs more, so we seldom are the lowest cost solution from the initial investment, but we offer the best value.” This is what makes EAM-Mosca unique. As a privately-owned compa- ny, it did not need to contend with bottom-line pressures from sharehold- ers, as is often the case for publicly owned companies. Because of that freedom, Wright explains that “the attitude that came from the ownership was always customer-focused and included the support to solve prob- lems and to come up with great solutions.” For this reason, Wright found his work especially rewarding, and as a result, he never gave attention to opportunities outside the company. When it became clear that his role as National Sales Manager would be better served by moving to company headquarters, staying with EAM was never in question. Three years after his promotion, he relocated to Penn- sylvania. Less than ten years after promoting to National Sales Manager, Wright was asked to serve as Vice President of Corrugated Industry Sales, mark- ing another milestone for the company, which had grown from operations CONTINUED ON PAGE 14 Randy Wright

Jimmy Dodd and Michael Murphy are transitioning into Wright’s role with shared responsibilities as Directors of National Accounts-Corrugated. Both Dodd and Murphy have a long history at EAM-Mosca and understand the company, the industry, and the product line. Dan Covert, who has been with the company for 28+ years, most re- cently as Product Manager for all unitizers, will also be tak- ing on more responsibilities handling all larger corrugated bundling systems in addition to all unitizers as Director of Capital Projects-Corrugated. Wright will continue taking on special projects as needed.

SLC Completes Custom Build-Out For HP PageWide T1190 Press Phoenix, Arizona based Stevens-Leinweber Construc- tion (SLC) announced it completed the custom build-out of 160,000-square-feet at Phoenix Logistics Center (PLC) Two, designed to meet the manufacturing and distribution needs of new tenant Georgia-Pacific LLC and its HP Page- Wide T1190 Press, one of the world’s largest high-volume digital pre-print solution for corrugated packing. The new press was purchased to expand the Hum- mingbird digital print solutions offered by Georgia-Pacific (GP). The equipment makes GP the only packaging sup- plier in North America to currently offer 110-inch wide web digital inkjet printing. Totaling 481,600-square-feet, PLC Two is the second building within Merit Partners’ Phoenix Logistics Center, a state-of-the-art warehouse, distribution and manufacturing campus in Phoenix. To support the T1190, SLC constructed a specialized foundation requiring 163 piers, each drilled 15 feet deep, to help support an 18” thick mat concrete foundation with heavy rebar reinforcement. The construction team also brought in 7200 amps of dedicated power specifically for the GP tenant improvement, as well as temporary power to allow GP to test its equipment while waiting for long- lead-time electrical gear.

The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Peachtree Wins Print Excellence Bronze Awards For Graphic Boxes Lawrenceville, Georgia based Peachtree Packaging & Dis- play announced it was awarded two 2023 Print Excellence Awards from the Graphic Media Alliance (GMA). Peachtree won two bronze awards in packaging for a SuperChef® Frying Oil graphic box for Chefler Foods and an ICEE® Slush graphic box for Big Easy Blends.

The GMA said that the level of competition was so fierce this year that several categories required the judges to search for minor imperfections to determine a winner. "The Print Excellence Awards showcases our finest of- ferings…and this year did not disappoint," said GMA Presi- dent Andrew Schall. "As demonstrated in this year's contest, our members continue to innovate, ensuring a bright future for our in- dustry and our association." Peachtree was honored with the other winners during the GMA's annual Print Week, held at multiple locations across the US in March.
Peachtree's projects were chosen from more than 440 entries in the packaging category, which included single cartons and containers, or an integrated series of packag- es sold as a single unit. The category further included folding cartons, flexible packaging, and corrugated packaging samples.

each semester,” Harris said. “We speak every semester at business week at our local college and we also participate in PPC’s TICCIT interactive program to educate the ele- mentary-aged students about our industry.” Harris said that she is currently talking to a two-year technical school that is interested and her local STEM high school now has access to AICC’s online courses. “They will be reviewing them over the summer and im- plementing some of our courses in some of their existing classes,” she said. “I’m very optimistic and eager to see how that works out.” With the relationship Harris has fostered with UTA, she said it has been easier to find engineers, designers, and office professionals than technical and trade workers. “Plant floor seems to be the biggest challenge,” she said. “I'm hopeful that as we build upon our newer rela- tionships with the high schools, STEM and two-year trade schools we will have some success stories to share.” A Template For Success Through the work of Harris, Innovative Fiber, Indepen- dence Corrugated and others like them, Salaverria said that ICPF can create recruitment templates and case stud- ies to be available for use by all industry companies. ICPF will also provide additional resources including videos, fact sheets and testimonials to aid in conversations and promote a unified message about the many benefits and opportunities associated with choosing a career in corru- gated packaging, she said. Making boxes may not sound that interesting to pro- spective employees compared to other careers out there, even though there are some great jobs available in the packaging and carton industries. It’s one of the reasons why Harris likes to bring in her younger employees who recently graduated to speak to them. “They seem to connect well with the audience and the students can relate,” she said.
