Role profile

Key responsibilities and objectives of the job:

1. Champion sustainability and support integration of sustainability into existing university policies, procedures and activities. o Assist with the review of policies; recommending changes to practices and procedures to help achieve continuous improvement and compliance with legislation. o Support the sustainability governance structure reflecting the relevance of sustainability issues to all parts of the university community and its stakeholders. o Facilitate working groups and develop sustainability action plans to ensure that sustainability is embedded across university e.g. procurement, IT, food, biodiversity. o Engage and liaise with staff, students and other sustainability and environmental related groups, to support the practical adoption and implementation of innovative ideas on campus. o Provide expert advice on sustainability issues. 2. Lead the ongoing operation of an effective ISO14001 accredited environmental management system (EMS). This includes: o Maintain the university’s environmental legislation register and ensure appropriate permits/ authorisations are in place. Provide expert advice to the university on environmental legislation, regulations and other external standards and requirements and ensure appropriate procedures and training are in place. o Manage an appropriate environmental audit process ensuring that it meets with internal and external requirements. 3. Lead on the development and implementation of the university’s waste management strategy to reduce overall costs, reduce the environmental impact and ensure safe disposal. This will include: o Managing procurement procedures and contract/tender documentation, contract award, contractor vetting, management of contractors and service delivery monitoring. o Maintaining and auditing operational waste procedures for which Estates and Facilities are directly responsible. 4. Maintain the sustainability guidance documents and training for capital projects and refurbishments and work with project teams to review and provide guidance on refurbishment and new build capital project requirements. 5. Oversee the management of sustainability data and ensure high quality sustainability data/benchmark submissions are completed to meet internal and external stakeholder requirements. 6. Support the engagement and liaison with teaching and research staff, student and other sustainability related groups and individuals in support of sustainability in the curriculum and research agenda. 7. Contribute to the internal and external communications of the Sustainability Team (e.g. writing reports and providing board papers, briefings and presentations for relevant committees/groups, responding to staff and student queries, social media sites). 8. Develop and maintain effective relationships with external networks including contributing to working groups and good practice initiatives. Lead, initiate or participate in meetings and events as required. 9. Contribute to managing the Sustainability Team budget for areas of responsibility and ensure efficient administration of all accounts for accuracy and to meet payment deadlines.

10. Undertake other duties as may be required that are commensurate with the level of the post.
