Kappas Return to Capitol Hill and Advocate in State Capitals Around the Country
I n the second year of the return of Kappa Alpha Psi ® to Capitol Hill, brothers met this year’s conference with much anticipation. As members convened April 30 – May 2 in Fairfax, Virginia, and on Capitol Hill, this event reconfirmed the commitment to the fraternity’s civic engagement. Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles, Jr. along with 27 th Grand Polemarch Robert L. Harris, 32 nd Grand Polemarch William “Randy” Bates, Jr. and numerous Kappa digni- taries engaged in robust political activity following the National St. Jude Sunday of Hope Program. Fraternity leadership exclusively toured the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Grand Polemarch Battles also attended a reception hosted by Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (Gamma Rho 1969). The reception was headlined by John W. Thompson (Alpha 1942), Chairman of the Microsoft Corporation Board of Directors. The Grand Polemarch met with several Members of Congress including Assistant Democratic Leader, James Clyburn of South Carolina, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Cedric Richmond of Louisiana, Sheila Jackson-Lee of Texas, Karen Bass of California, Robin Kelly of Illinois, and Anthony Brown of Maryland. Brothers were briefed on Monday, May 1 on the issues of Criminal Justice Reform, Voting Rights, Veterans Affairs, Education Policies
