Because the transaction is a purchase of assets, Inter- national Paper expects to realize a tax benefit with an estimated net present value of approximately $300 million. International Paper expects annual synergies of ap- proximately $175 million by the end of 2018, which will require the need for one-time costs of approxi- mately $85 million. In this transaction, International Paper acquired five pulp mills and two converting facilities that produce fluff pulp, softwood pulp, and specialty pulp prod- ucts for a number of consumer applications includ- ing diapers, other hygiene products, tissue, and textiles. The acquired business has approximately 1,900 employees around the world, with manufactur- ing operations based in Canada, Poland and the Unit- ed States, located in Mississippi, Georgia and North Carolina. The combined businesses will be called Global Cel- lulose Fibers, led by Senior Vice President Jean-Michel Ribieras, and reported as a separate business segment beginning with the company’s release of earnings for the fourth quarter of 2016. pharmaceutical industries by roughly two to three times in the next five years. “As this trend continues to increase on a global level, it is of paramount importance that all involved in the packaging and processing industry make con- tinued efforts to maintain tracking control in order to prevent counterfeiting and aid in product recall,” said Paula Feldman, Director, Business Intelligence, PMMI. “With North America alone accounting for fifty per- cent of the total growth of the global anti-counterfeit food packaging market in 2014, it is increasingly im- portant that we as an industry continue to take the necessary action to protect our brands, as well as those around the globe.” The study looks at the effects of the Food Safety Modernization Act and the challenges it presents to converters. The Act is driving the food and beverage market, in particular, toward more track and trace technology, which will aid in the recall standards es- tablished in the Act. Manufacturers are now challenged to meet the FDA guidelines and avoid a recall but to do so affordably. Gaps remain in supply chain reporting, according to the report. Transporting is particularly vulnerable from the source to manufacturer and from the dis- tributor to the retailer. Of the top 10 most valuable counterfeit markets, pharmaceuticals are ranked number and food is ranked fourth. Mark Andy Digital Series Ink Receives UL Certification Mark Andy has announced UL 969 certification for Digital Series ink on Avery Dennison substrates. This certification is given by the Underwriters Laborato- ries and is focused on ensuring the quality and relia- bility of durable labels. In order to obtain this classification, specially formulated Mark Andy inks were run through a series of tests performed by the UL.This includes scratch, exposure, ten-day oven, out- door weathering, indoor fade tests and various other stress tests to submit the materials to the harsh con- ditions they would face in the real world. The inks were able to pass the majority of the tests without a laminate present. This will allow converters to avoid the cost of expensive laminates when print- ing durable labels with Mark Andy Digital Series inks. A broad range of substrates were tested and ap- proved, including white PET, clear PET, and chrome PET for outdoor usage, as well as white BOPP and synthetic paper for indoor use.
