80+ Years of Scheurer Stories

I have been a medical assistant at Scheurer Primary Care in Elkton for over ten years, but my Scheurer story didn’t start there. Rewind 35 years and I was born at Scheurer Hospital by a nurse and my dad. Dr. Ray had just stepped out and I made my entrance without him. Over the next few years, I had a few stays at Scheurer and most formatively, at age six I had my appendix taken out (and I got to stay in the mermaid room!). All of these experiences had me knowing by kindergarten that I wanted to work at Scheurer. I was always comfortable and always saw friendly and familiar faces. Dr. Reddy was my pediatrician and when I had the opportunity to job shadow in high school, she remembered me and all of my history with Scheurer. It were moments like those that kept inspiring me to come back. I am very blessed to have a place like this my whole life that is my home away from home. -Jillian LaFave

It’s dicult to believe that the dream of Dr. Clare Scheurer, his wife Clara and nurse Ruth Clabuesch has grown into the wonderful, complete, compassionate -- and amazing -- care center that Scheurer has become. All three would be immensely proud of what has resulted. My story began when I was born upstairs in the original Scheurer Hospital in late 1949. My dad, the late Walt Rummel, was the publisher of The Pigeon Progress and The Elkton Advance and I’ve been told our family was contemplating moving to live in Pigeon, instead of his childhood home of Sebewaing. Dr. Dixon delivered me and I had the opportunity to thank him in 1982 for doing so. I don’t remember much of that first hospitalization, although our family has shared details over the years with at least two other families who were my mother’s hospital roommates back then. Actually, I never had to spend even one day in Scheurer Hospital since then, so -- while that achievement isn’t necessarily good for Scheurer business, I have appreciated it! In 1978, my future wife Sally and I moved to Pigeon to become publisher and owner of The Progress-Advance. We participated in every possible Scheurer fundraiser and I served on the Board of Trustees for several years. We realized then and still understand how essential a quality health system is to any community -- especially small, rural towns such as Pigeon.

Some of the best care we have had since we retired...from everyone we have seen. Thank you! -George Ficht
