65 years in business A look back maxon has always been driven by one goal: pushing the boundaries of what’s possible even further. When necessary, the company has also reinvented itself. There have been many highlights throughout its history, and we present some of them here.
1961: Founding of Interelectric On December 5, 1961, Interelectric was founded by the Braun family (and later renamed maxon). Shortly after its founding, the company was able to acquire land in the village of Sachseln in the Swiss canton of Obwalden.
1963: Foil‑cutter production On the newly purchased land, the first production facility is built. It begins manufacturing shaving foils for the legendary “Braun Sixtant” razor. In 1964, the development of electric motors is also initiated.
1983: 10 million motors maxon needed 11 years to produce its first five million motors. The second five million took only three and a half years. In October 1983, the production of the ten‑millionth motor is celebrated.
1997: maxon on Mars On July 4, 1997, NASA’s “Sojourner” rover lands on Mars. The probe is powered by eleven maxon motors. This was a sensation and made the small company from Obwalden widely known to the public.
