RUSSELL | Another pharmacy in Russell Township, the Downtown IDA Pharmacy, has opened in downtown Russell, increas- ing the total number of pharmacies avail- able to consumers in Russell and Embrun to six. The new pharmacy’s opening caused some confusion locally, as it opened as part of the IDA group, just as the former Russell IDA beside the Russell Medical Clinic on Craig Street changed to Russell Pharmacy PharmaChoice. The two pharmacies are not affiliated with each other. “I feel that Russell can support two phar- macies,” said new Russell IDA Pharmacy owner Cindy Cecillon. “Having two pharma- cies gives the people of Russell a choice as to where they feel they will receive the best care.” Ian McNeil, owner of the Russell Phar- macy PharmaChoice also believes Russell has a large enough customer base. “Rus- sell Pharmacy is entering its thirtieth year and has been supported by the community all that time.” It has been in business since 1984. McNeil purchased the drugstore from Brian Mehr, pharmacist, who still takes shifts in the store, late last year. “We made the change to PharmaChoice in August, to become more competitive.” McNeil also plans future expansion. “Tim- ing will be determined by growth. The core business is still elderly customers, but we’re seeing a growing clientele of families pre- ferring small town Russell to the suburbs.” Both stores offer free delivery. Pharma- Choice offers seniors’ discounts on Thurs- day and Downtown IDA offers seniors’ dis- counts on Tuesday. In Embrun the Notre Dame Medical Cen- tre and Embrun Medical Pharmacy recently opened, joining Jean Coutu, Shopper’s Drug Mart, and My Drugstore at Co-op In- dependent.
