This suggests that a later school day might increase atten- dance and encourage engagement. The study is a result of discussion from the January 26, 2022 board meeting where trustees passed a motion to support earlier start times for elementary students and later start times for secondary students. Further research and discussions with transportation companies and stakeholders are still pending. There is no timeline for implementation.

The UCDSB received the results of a sleep study that was started early last year. During the regular meeting on April 12, the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) received a report from Chief Psychologist Dr. Jennifer Curry along with Clinical Psychologist Dr. David Armstrong. They presented a brief overview on enhancing student wellness and attendance by increasing sleep for secon- dary students, backed with scientific and professional guidance. CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM FOR MP ABOUT FEDERAL BUDGET

MP Francis Drouin expressed cautious optimism about the new federal budget. “I’m happy to see the future of where we’re going,” said Drouin, during a phone interview April 5. The 2023 federal budget announced last month includes $43 billion in new spending programs over the next six years with its main priority targets as health care, fostering a “greener” economy for Canada, and helping make life “more affordable” for Canadians. Critics of the new budget complain that it does not include either new money or plans to deal with the issue of affordable housing that is becoming a growing concern for many municipalities or more funding help for dea- ling with aging municipal infrastructure like roads. Drouin noted that previous federal bud- gets have set up programs dealing with those issues and that those programs are still in place. “There is going to be accelerated fun- ding,” Drouin said, for affordable housing programs. “There are funds that are avai- lable. But municipalities will have to step up and mandate how those projects go ahead.” The MP indicated that municipal govern- ments must be more active in dealing with developers on creating more affordable housing units within their communities. He cited as one example that local government could require developers to guarantee a specific percentage of affordable housing units as part of a new residential project during the municipal planning and approval phase. The federal budget includes $3.6 billion in new money during the 2023-2024 fiscal year for health care. Stage Two expands that coverage to Canadians under the age of 18, people with disabilities, and seniors. The expanded support program will be in full operation by 2025. He noted that some low-income families and individuals have to deal with tight budgets for food, hydro, home heating, and other expenses. The Agricultural Society requests the same permit every year for the purpose of selling alcohol at the Russell Fair, which this year is on August 17 to 20. -Christopher Smith observaient la scène depuis les trottoirs devant le centre communautaire, les conduc- teurs de tracteurs ont aligné leurs machines dans le stationnement du centre. Armé d’une gerbe de maïs séché, l’abbé Albert Kaumba de la paroisse Saint-Isidore, accompagné d’un bénévole portant un vase d’eau bénite, est passé devant chaque tracteur. En agitant sa gerbe de maïs, le prêtre a oint chaque tracteur de quelques gouttes d’eau bénite, afin d’assurer une bonne récolte cette année et une saison de travail sans danger pour tous les agriculteurs. Les Chevaliers de Colomb de Saint-Isidore et de Fournier ont organisé cet événement dominical. La bénédiction des tracteurs a été suivie d’une messe à l’église et d’un déjeuner communautaire.
