THE

Booktastic! World Book Day

READING Abbey took part in ‘World Book Day’ by dressing up as characters from our favourite books. Pupils and staff alike enjoyed a range of ‘booky’ activities that supported sharing our love of reading. Scholatic’s book fair allowed children the chance to exchange their ‘World Book Day’ tokens. The level of effort and originality in making their costumes was fantastic! Thanks to Mrs Flanagan for the story SAT SRI AKAL On Thursday, Year 1 visited the Guru Nanak Guurdwara in Smethwick as part of their RE learning on Sikhism. Escaping the blizzard outside, the children were greeted by a warm, peaceful and serene environment upon entering the Gurdwara. The first step was to remove shoes and cover heads as a sign of respect. We had a short tour of the Gurdwara and then a chance to share some of our learning via a ‘question and answer’ session. Children were then able to experience a few minutes sitting in the main prayer hall where other members of the community were meditating. This was followed by food in the Langar hall. The children ate chips and beans whilst some of the adults sampled traditional food. The Langar represents equality and welcomes anyone from any background or religion to cook, serve and eat food for free. Thanks to Mrs Kaur for the story.
