A Year to Remember

HOW DO WE MAKE 2019 GREAT?

The start of a new year is a good time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. What were some of your major accomplishments in 2018? What are some areas you could have improved? How do you use these experiences to do even better in 2019? I’ve put some thought into this, and there are three big things I want to accomplish in the coming year. First, I want to start helping more people. At Woodlyn PT, we have the resources to help any number of patients deal with pain or rehab. It’s my job as a business owner to get the word out so patients in need can more easily find the practice and the help they need. My second major goal for 2019 revolves around education. I have plans to launch regular workshops for patients and nonpatients alike. When someone is in pain, they can’t recover if they don’t have the right tools. I’d like to host workshops focused on

the experience. After years in the industry, I have a great deal of wisdom I would like to impart on PTs who are just starting out. There are things about being a

physical therapist and working with patients you can’t learn in school — the kind of lessons you have to

learn through firsthand experience. The more I am able to teach someone, the better they can be and the stronger our profession is in the long term. Plus, it would be nice not to be a one-man show anymore. Finally, I have a goal that I’m sure I share with many patients: I want to spend more quality time with my family. We used to travel often, bonding as a family through adventures in new places. Then, I got caught up in work, and I didn’t get away with the family for four years. I got burned out, and I had to remember the importance of taking time off. As a physical therapist, it’s important that I’m here for my patients, but I also need to be physically and mentally energized. Furthermore, it’s crucial that I’m there for my family and get to be part of their lives. Thank you for your support in 2018. I appreciate all of my patients who have come to me in the past, and I am optimistic for the future. If you know anyone who might be able to benefit from joining the practice, now is the time to send them our way. I have big plans for 2019, and you don’t want to miss out.

common problems like back pain and sciatica, providing a brief overview of what’s causing a patient’s pain, and offering resources to help them recover. I would also like to expand on the little-known factors that can cause pain. It doesn’t do much good for patients to get treatment if they don’t know that poor sitting posture or certain sleeping positions are damaging their back every day. In addition to educating my patients, I would also like to bring on a new physical therapist and show them the ropes. I’ve had the privilege of being a mentor for students in the past, and I enjoyed

Balance Born out of Hardship THE ORIGIN OF THE PILATES SYSTEM

When most people think of Pilates, they think of the exercise trend that was the butt of a hundred ’90s sitcom jokes. In reality, this system of stretches and workouts is a great option for people of all ages looking to stay active, tone their muscles, and improve their balance, all with minimal space and equipment requirements. One need only look at the history of Pilates to understand how this century-old discipline has helped shape exercise science today. Unlikely Beginnings The man for whom the Pilates system is named, Joseph Pilates, was no stranger to health challenges. Born in Germany in the late 19th century, Joseph suffered from both asthma and rickets, making any form of physical activity difficult. But rather than shy away from exercise, he enthusiastically followed his father into gymnastics, later picking up bodybuilding and martial arts. Instead of being held back by his body, Joseph made it his life’s mission to help himself and others live healthy lives. Eventually, he would begin developing his own fitness theories.

after moving to England in 1912. Then the First World War broke out. Despite having worked closely with English law enforcement, Joseph’s nationality was enough to land him in an internment camp alongside fellow German citizens. As the world was consumed by the bloodiest conflict it had ever seen, the young fitness instructor did what he did best: He helped those around him get stronger and healthier. Knowledge Through Adversity In this internment camp, the system that would eventually become Pilates was developed. Because of the constraints of captivity, Joseph had to devise exercises that didn’t rely heavily on equipment and could be performed in tight, confined spaces. To this day, Pilates remains one of the most flexible, scalable fitness methods around. The techniques first developed by Joseph Pilates are still practiced today, helping thousands of people develop their core postural muscles, gain better fitness, and improve their balance. As a result of his forward-looking techniques and steadfast spirit of personal development, Joseph Pilates remains an inspiring figure in the world of physical fitness.

Light in a Dark Time Joseph became a known quantity in the fitness world, going as far as training Scotland Yard officers in self-defense

SNOW PLACE LIKE HOME

THE ULTIMATE WINTER SURVIVAL GUIDE

Mookie and Brice here, enjoying our favorite time of year. We’re both Chesapeake Bay retrievers, which means we’re built for the winter months. There’s nothing we love more than playing in the snow with our family! Here are some of our favorite tricks for having a fun, safe snow day. Whether you’re shoveling the driveway or preparing a snowball fight, playing out in the snow is quite the workout. Be sure to make time to warm up before getting active. Taking a brisk walk or doing some dynamic stretches for at least 10 minutes can reduce your odds of injury. Warm Up Before You Get Cold

he’s facing away from the sun. As you build him up, place a stick in the center where each segment meets for extra stability. Be sure to pack snow between each section, too. Once you’ve added that corncob pipe and button nose, take a spray bottle and douse your snowman in a light mist of water, just enough to freeze the top layer of snow and keep him from melting too quickly.

Layer Up

If you don’t have a fur coat to keep warm like we do, then it’s important to dress in layers before you head out in the snow. Look for moisture- wicking material that pulls sweat away from your body, keeping you warm without overheating.

Make Sunscreen Part of the Snow Day

Sunscreen isn’t just useful in the summer months. Humans should apply sunscreen whenever they spend time outside. Just because the weather’s cold doesn’t mean the sun can’t burn you. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that snow reflects 80 percent of UV rays, which can badly burn unprotected skin.

Help Frosty Hang Around

We know not everyone loves the snow, so we hope these tips help you enjoy the last months of winter a little bit more. Stay warm out there!

Here’s How to Choose the Right Team for Recovery INJURED ON THE JOB?

Workers’ comp and physical therapy are becoming more connected every year. After being injured on the job, physical therapy can aid recovery and reduce the duration of a

return to work after an injury demands a certain skill set. When searching for the right PT, ask if they have treated patients in your position before. How many therapists will I see? The last thing you need after being injured is to be passed around from one PT to another. There’s nothing wrong with clinics that have many PTs or if another therapist can step in on days when the regular provider is absent. However, being regularly handed off to a new therapist can disrupt treatment if the new provider doesn’t know the plan of care. You and your PT should always be on the same page. Where will treatment take place? When recovering from an injury, it is vital that you are able to receive uninterrupted treatment. For this reason, you should choose a physical therapist who is conveniently located. You don’t want to suffer from any delays in treatment or miss your appointments because you weren’t able to make time to see your PT. At Woodlyn PT, we have both experience treating injured workers and the resources to ensure they get the prompt treatment they need. If you’ve filed a workers’ comp claim and need help healing from your injuries, give us a call at 302.366.7600. We can help you get on the road to recovery.

workers’ comp case. A 2012 study published in The Spine Journal found that early- intervention physical therapy cut the need for advanced

imaging from 54.9 percent to 29.4 percent. It also reduced the necessity of additional physician visits from 81

percent to 52.6 percent and lumbar spine surgery from 9.9 percent to 4.7 percent.

The physical therapist you receive treatment from has a huge impact on the results you see. As we discussed last month, workers in Delaware have the right to choose their own doctor after a work- related accident. Here are some questions you need to ask before choosing a PT during your workers’ comp case. Does the PT have experience treating workers’ comp patients? Excellent physical therapists often specialize in certain areas. Some have more experience dealing with sports-related injuries, while others may prefer working with seniors recovering from a fall. Chicken Chop Suey

The Word on Woodlyn

Ingredients

Inspired by The New York Times

• 2 large or 4 medium chicken thighs • 3 pounds bok choy, cut into 3–4-inch ribbons • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil • 3 tablespoons oyster sauce • 2 teaspoons sugar

• 2 tablespoons cornstarch, mixed with 4 tablespoons water • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil • Salt and pepper, to taste

“I have been attending physical therapy at Woodlyn PT since Sept. 19, 2018. Prior to my physical therapy sessions, I had severe pain in my lower back that radiated down both of my legs. If I got up during the night for any reason, I could hardly walk. My mobility was limited which resulted in the termination of my health club membership. To deal with the pain, I spent five years taking 15 mg of Meloxicam every day. I started attending physical therapy sessions twice a week. In just over five weeks, I stopped experiencing lower back pain during the day and the pain at night is minimal. I am no longer taking the Meloxicam, and I am definitely more mobile. I am ready to resume my health club membership!”
