MATHS & ENGLISH
Maths and English skills are essential in everyday life. Many careers and universities require these subjects, making them important for your future progression. If you leave school without achieving a grade 4 or above in either subject, you will be required to continue studying it until you achieve a grade 4. You will only study the subject(s) you need. For example, if you achieve a grade 4 in maths and a grade 3 in English, you will only be required to study English. Studying maths and English at college is often a different experience from studying them at school. Your maths and English lessons will be timetabled around your
main college course and will support the development of the skills needed to succeed in your exams. Your course tutors will also embed maths and English into your units, helping you apply these skills to your future career. For example, in Construction, maths is used to calculate square footage and angles; joiners use trigonometry daily; and in hairdressing, angles are used for cutting layers while ratios are important for colour mixing. English skills are equally important and include effective communication, report writing, presenting work and findings, and developing professional written and verbal communication skills.
ESOL
Preston College is a College of Sanctuary and is proud to offer a full-time course for people who need help improving their English. The ESOL course helps you develop the language skills needed to move on to further study, training, or employment. You will receive support in college to help build your confidence and settle into life in the UK. Our programmes include nationally recognised English qualifications and opportunities to try different subject areas, helping you make the right choice for your future career. Before joining the course, you will need to complete an assessment with one of our specialist teachers.
We also offer this course to 15-year-olds (Year 10 and Year 11 students) who are new to the UK and need extra support with English.
