Five races down and one to go! July was a busy month for our team, as we participated in both the Reagan Run 5K in Dixon and the Miles in Memory 5k in Byron. 61 employees participated in the Reagan Run, and we got as close as we’ve ever been to winning their Corporate Challenge by placing 3rd out of 11 teams! It was our first time at- tending the Miles in Memory 5K (formerly the Rick Hahn Memorial Run), and 45 employees braved the heat, humidity and challenging course at the Byron Forest Preserve for a great cause. Our next event took us over to Amboy in August to participate in their Depot Days Dash. While it was a very rainy morning, we still had 32 employees come out to walk or run and ultimately win their Corporate Challenge (for the 2nd year in a row!), which means an extra $1000.00 in the bank for our charity! Currently, our team has raised $7080.00 for Serenity Hospice Home in Oregon from participating in these 5 events! Our last event will take place in Oregon at their Autumn on Parade 5K in early October, so please be sure to sign up and help finish a great season!

Are You the Right Type? by Janet Sutton & Janet Jarvis, Account Manager Donor Recruitment

Crest Foods is now the sponsor for the quarterly blood drive for the Ashton & Franklin Grove community held at the Mills & Petrie Building in Ashton. Our first drive was September 1st and our next drive will be December 1st from noon – 6 PM . If you would like to donate blood or volunteer your time, please contact Janet Sutton (x203). The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give blood to help ensure a stable and diverse blood supply is available during emergencies of all types. A diverse blood supply is important to ensuring the needs of all patients are met. Red blood cells carry markers that determine one’s blood type, and some blood types are unique to certain racial and ethnic groups. For example, approximately 45 percent of Caucasians are Type O, but 51 percent of Afri- can Americans and 57 percent of Hispanics are Type O. Type O is routinely in short supply and in high demand by hospitals – both because it is the most common blood type and because Type O-negative blood, in particular, is the universal type needed for emergency transfusions. Because blood from donors of the same ethnic background as the recipient is less likely to cause complications, the Red Cross must maintain a diverse blood supply to meet these diverse patient needs. During the September blood drive, 24 pints of blood were donated. Janet and the Red Cross are stepping up their goal for the December blood drive and hope to reach 50 pints of donated blood. We appreciate your support!
