Cleaning up in Hawkesbury

Cleaning up the river on a beautiful day, a group of supporters of Ottawa Riverkeeper helped to clean up the shoreline in Hawkesbury on May 2.

Even the little ones were involved in the clean-up May 2. Above, Willa Keech helps to hold up the Ottawa Riverkeeper banner for the photo.

The group offers information to local businesses and interested community members on how to keep the river clean by making small changes. “We give them suggestions, like don’t cut the grass too close to the shoreline and reduce the use of pesticides,” said Lafontaine. “We plant plastic trees on the river slopes, reducing contaminants going into the watershed by 80 or 90 percent.” The Ottawa Riverkeeper is responsible for protecting and promoting the health of the Ottawa River, from Carleton to Camachigama. The river, and thus the health of the community, is threatened by pollution from industry, municipal waste, dams, storm water, agriculture, shoreline development and wetland destruction. The goal of the Riverkeeper programs and activities is to provide water that is swimmable, fishable

and drinkable, for now and in the future. In 2000, a group of concerned citizens gathered to discuss the health of the river and what could be done to improve it. In 2001, the Ottawa Riverkeeper was born and the river had a guardian. The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is

presented by Loblaws Companies Ltd., and is one of the most significant conservation programs through direct action in Canada. More information on the Ottawa Riverkeeper is available at www. ottawariverkeeper.ca.

The waterway is the essence of any community. Without cleanwater, nothing else matters. Each year, thousands of Canadians unite to clean up local shorelines and take part in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Members of the Ottawa Riverkeeper gathered in Hawkesbury May 2 to clean up the shoreline and offer information. The clean up crew began at 9 a.m., and rewarded their efforts with a barbecue lunch at noon after the clean-up. “Last year, there were only three of us,” said Louis Lafontaine, organizer of the clean- up. “Despite the small number, we were still able to pick up 53 pounds of waste over a distance of two kilometers.”
