BEST BRAINS

Best Brains is a Virginia-based enrich- ment program that improves students’ academic growth. Every week, students learn from board-certified teachers in an interactive, fun environment. The program is designed to teach not just memoriza- tion but also analytical and critical thinking skills, with new topics introduced every week. This approach encourages lifelong learning and application. “We try to ensure that the student gets the concepts, so once the concepts are clear,

then the problem automatically gets solved,” said Satish Vellanki, location head at Best Brains. With a low teacher-to-student ratio, instructors can give students individual- ized focus on their math, English, abacus and general knowledge skills. The learning approach extends beyond the classroom to summer camps, after school programs, winter camps and more — but the main focus is on academics. One of the most important parts of a school is the learning environment that students experience. This is why Best Brains appre- ciates the flexibility of St. John Properties flex/R&D space. The space planners at St. John worked with Best Brains to create an efficient floor plan allowing school leaders to set up class space in the best way for the children to learn. The flexible spaces allow teachers and staff to give students the comfort they need to learn. “The design of the class- room will make the child feel more at

home, rather than at a different facility in the absence of their parents, and [in] a good environment for them to concentrate on the subject matter,” Vellanki said. For Best Brains staff, St. John is reachable, which is also important to the school’s success. “There is someone to guide you if you have a maintenance issue,” Vellanki said. The staff provides thorough customer service for any problems tenants may have. St. John Properties works as a team with the school administrators to make certain that Best Brains has the best learning environment possible.

Catapult Learning seeks to help students in grades 2 through 12 to overcome their educational challenges. Catapult’s schools are small — the High Roads School of Baltimore County will teach approximately 50 students, and the High Roads School of Anne Arundel County will teach approximately 70 students — for every two students, there is one staff member.

Catapult aims to teach students the skills they need to reenter the public school system. Certain students can begin plan- ning for this transition within a few months, others stay at Catapult for a few years, and some students finish their education at Catapult. “Ultimately, the goal is to stabilize behav- iors, improve the academics, and then return the students to the least restrictive environment, which is to their public school settings,” said Josh Strzegowski, the director of special projects at Catapult Learning, Inc. To do this, the school has a program that integrates positive reinforcement, academic interventions, behavior modifi- cations, occupational therapy, social work, speech and language therapy, and, at times, psychiatric services to help students reach their full potential.

“Everything is individualized,” Strzegowski said. “Every kid has his or her own tailored academic plan. We do rotations, which means we present the work in 20-minute blocks, and all the curriculum is adapted or modified to the student’s functioning level. So if a student is an 8th grader and he or she is learning on a 6th grade level, then we take the 8th grade curriculum and modify it to meet the student’s needs.” St. John Properties’ role in this process is to provide a comfortable environment for

the students. In the case of Catapult Learning, a new facility is being constructed at Greenleigh at Crossroads in Baltimore County. Their existing location at I-97 Business Park in Anne Arundel County was recently expanded. “St. John has been a great partner with us as far as providing the appropriate facility,” Strzegowski explained. “They’ve done the build out for us. When we entered into the contract with them, they brought in a team of architects and engineers and designers and they built out the site to our exact needs. They’re great landlords to work with — they’re responsive to any concerns that we have.” With less time thinking about construction and more time spent with students, staff at Catapult Learning can plan for the best ways to help their incoming Baltimore and Anne Arundel County students.

Teachers at College Park Academy prepare their students for college with early college credits and extra-curricular enrichment programs. With blended learning, some students can graduate with 60 college credits on their transcripts, including 25 credits from the University of Maryland. Thanks to the blended learning environ- ments, the college prep students can study according to their learning styles. “By allowing our students a variety of virtual options, our scholars are able to learn anytime and anywhere, as well as have the ability to advance in their coursework without having to wait for the rest of their class- mates,” said Dr. Bernadette Ortiz-Brewster, executive director of College Park Academy. “The acceleration option allows the students the opportunity to earn high school credits while in middle school, as well as college credits while in high school.” Students at College Park Academy can take elective courses thanks to the program’s technology. Even in these classrooms, their tests, quizzes, text- books and more are all online. After school dismisses for the day, students can request a virtual tutor to explain concepts. Learning through so much technology requires a dynamic environment. Thanks to St. John Properties’ design, College Park Academy will soon have a new facility for these high-tech students. “The flexible and modern design of the building will support and contribute to the effectiveness of the innovative curriculum delivery,” said Dr. Wiseman, the dean of the College of

Education at the University of Maryland and a College Park Academy Board Member. As part of the college prep program, the school collaborates with the University of Maryland. “We have established an exten- sive internship program with over 40 university students and professors,” explained Ortiz-Brewster. “UMD students are paired with CPA students that need academic support, but they also have unique opportunities for mentoring our scholars as well.” This partnership requires that College Park Academy have a large space for students within a close distance of the University of Maryland. This is where St. John helps the school with its new facility. “The school’s new location will allow our UMD and CPA partnership to continue to grow,” Ortiz-Brewster said. “The close proximity to the university will allow the university interns and professors to work with the school community.” The school’s students will greatly benefit from the closer connections they can develop with their academic mentors.

Frederick Classical Charter School is a public charter school in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The mission of the school is “to provide elementary and middle school-aged children in Frederick County with a well-rounded, college-focused instructional program that develops students’ knowledge, reason, and self-expression. The long-term vision of the Frederick Classical Charter School is to be nationally recognized as a replicable model for providing a traditional, rigorous liberal arts education using well-researched instructional approaches.”

Frederick Classical opened in 2013 after a long search for a suitable property. The school is centrally located at Riverside Technology Park in Frederick, Maryland, allowing access to students from all corners of the county. The school is funded through the local school system, Frederick County Public Schools, and is tuition-free. Frederick Classical currently educates 360 students in kindergarten through 8th grade. The school recently received an eight-year contract extension with Frederick County Public Schools and will

increase capacity up to 376 students over the next two school years. The classical curriculum is a time-tested, research-based approach providing students with a rigorous, language-intensive and inte- grated program. Teachers and students continuously discuss the seven virtues that provide the foundation for learning at the school — love, temperance, patience, dili- gence, humility, constancy and courage. With small class sizes, Frederick Classical teachers are able to differen- tiate lessons for students and carefully integrate subjects using multimodal strategies that match the content being taught. Students learn Spanish, music, art and physical education beginning in kindergarten, with Latin language course beginning in 4th grade. The goal of clas- sical education is to help students learn how to learn, by emphasizing the inter- connection of knowledge. St. John Properties worked closely with Frederick Classical founders and leader- ship to build a professional, safe, func- tional school facility. The first phase of the build-out met the basic needs of the start-up school, including classrooms, a

multi-purpose room, restrooms and offices. A black-top space was desig- nated for outdoor play. The second phase of the build-out extended class- rooms and offices as well as opened a gymnasium and expanded the outdoor play area. The school leadership is currently planning for the final phase of the facility buildout to complete the remaining unfinished space and is considering adding a science room, music room and other multi- purpose spaces.

Moore Career College is home to three accredited programs: massage, welding and barbering. When the students receive their certificate after 7-12 months, they leave the college prepared for an in-demand career paying at least $20 per hour. Moore is the only college in Baton Rouge that teaches these programs.

In their classes, the students learn about competency, responsibility, and personal and professional development from instructors who have real-life experience in the field. “We use teachers within the industry and focus the training on industry standards and licensing objectives,” Speedy Moore, the president of Moore Career College, said. “Industry leaders are invited to speak to our students during their tenure.” The instructors’ experience makes them even more valuable as teachers at Moore. “Being that the owners of the school are former teachers and coaches, the school’s curriculum and lesson plans are based on sound educational principles,” Speedy Moore said. “Even though the teachers of the programs are not educators but skilled craftsmen, they are taught the basics of

class organization, presentations and classroom management.”

John’s team coordinated with Moore, the city and the contractors to stay on schedule. “As always, the economics are a big factor in any tenant/lessor relationship,” Moore said. This shows the importance of Moore’s interactions with Todd Pevey, a regional partner with St. John Properties. “He was very receptive to thinking outside of the box to make this happen. He was great at listening to the needs of our college and meeting them with innovative arrangements that were financially attractive.” With a large, dynamic facility for massage, welding and barbering courses, teachers have the resources they need, and students can better learn the skills they need for their careers.

With the low teacher-student ratio and amount of space needed for the variety of the programs, Moore Career College considers it challenging to find a good location. “The biggest challenge was to find a location that was versatile enough to accommodate both lab work for welders and classroom environment for massage and barbering,” Moore said. This is why the college has worked with St. John Properties since October 2015; thanks to St. John’s flexibility and innovation, the college has exactly what it needs to educate students. “The other challenge was getting the build-out done within the projected avail- ability dates,” Moore said. Fortunately, St.
