Board of Trustees Meeting Agenda | February 2019

— — Sense of comfort and ease when answering that “interview question”

— These three words (diversity, inclusion, and opportunity) are like a layer or a pyramid: — — Inclusion = CWU needs to be welcoming — — Diversity = CWU needs to celebrate differences — — Opportunity = CWU needs to make sure it actually works (e.g., assuming someone has the money to participate when they may not does not work) — Access and Opportunity to Access = pairing these two to create a learning environment for people to be successful — Inclusion: making sure everyone has an opportunity to be heard; people have different methods of communication: — For example texting about an Open House assumes that everyone invited uses texts Other considerations: — Sending communication materials in Spanish

— Not everyone has access to the internet — Going paperless can leave out people

— Another example: Financial Aid 101 event this week; sent out postcards ; they were very effective — compared to sending emails and making ‘phone calls (which may have been less effective than the postcards)

— Making sure needs are met so opportunity can be accessed: — — Language — — Method of communication — — “Old School” can be very effective (e.g., postcards for Financial Aid 101) — — Using multiple technologies

— Discussion about the similarities and differences between “Equality of Opportunity” and “Equality of Outcome(s)” — — Onus should be on the students and the faculty members to access the tools that are needed to be successful (e.g., help with math; once a student knows help with math is available, the student needs to access that support)

— — Prudent attempt to provide the resources for equality of opportunity — — Example: providing support programs and services for students

— Racialized goals: need to be very open about this; need to use the words: race, gender, SES, ability — Need to get comfortable with the vocabulary — Involving the people about whom we are talking — What do we need? Professional development; training; cultural competencies — What would students think about these goals — What about the community? Effectively recruit people to work in our area — what is the interaction with the community like? — Surrounding community does not embrace CWU or the students — CWU does not seem to have a very strong influence on our surrounding community
