Board of Trustees Meeting Agenda | February 2019

Dear Chair Erickson and Board of Trustees Members:

I appreciate this opportunity to submit a brief overview of key Faculty Senate activities since your last meeting in October 2018.

Continued Commitment to Core Values- Student Success and Faculty Consultation:

The Faculty Senate continues to be invested in contributing to the retention efforts on campus. We have worked closely with the Provost’s office to draft and move forward important policies to remove barriers and provide supports to students. We also remain committed to strengthening shared governance. Faculty voice in decision- making is critical for maintaining the academic integrity of the institution, fulfilling our mission, and best serving our students.

Changes to the Faculty Code:

In October 2018, we brought three Faculty Code changes forward for Board approval. The Provost Council expressed concern about one of these changes, which included a detailed process of consultation related to reorganization. The Board decided to take no action on any of the three proposed changes during the October meeting. We would like to update you on the progress made in revising the contested Code language and also apprise you of the three Code changes before you for approval at this meeting.

Consultation Process in Cases of Reorganization

Originally, the change before you today to revise Section I of the Code and another change to add a detailed reorganization process were slated to come forward for your approval Summer 2018. The Provost Council raised concerns about the detailed reorganization process, and in the spirit of shared governance, we took time to listen to their concerns and make revisions. The revised version came before the Board in October, at which time the Provost Council again raised concerned about the proposed change, noting a primary concern of placement in the Code rather than University policy. The proposed change was not voted on by the Board. Since the October Board meeting, we have worked closely with the President and Provost Council to work through this impasse. We have jointly decided that the specific process for consultation related to reorganization fits better in University policy than in Faculty Code. We
