“Let me no wrong or idle word Unthinking say; Bet thou a seal upon my lips Through all today.” 17. Strength for the Crossing “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee” (Isa. 43:2). Before we reach the place where such waters must be crossed, there is almost always a private word spoken by the Beloved to the lover. That is the word which the enemy will belittle. He will try to wreck our tranquility by making us afraid, but this will put him to flight: “I believe God,- that it shall be even as it was told me.” . . . And then, or ever we were aware, we have crossed the wa ters, and they did not overflow us. —Amy Carmichael. 18. Talents for the Master “Then he which had received the one talent ; . . said, Lord . . . I was afraid . . . and hid thy talent in the earth . . . His Lord answered . . . Thou . . . slothful servant . . . Take therefore the talent from him” (Matt. 25:24-38). Not with yardstick nor with bushel » do we attempt to estimate a life. Nor with scales or years can we make a just appraisal. The.Master in' this story of the talents declares plainly that life’s measuring rod is faithful ness. George MacDonald epitomizes the truth thus: “He who is faithful over a few things is lord of cities. The faithfulness is all.”—Selected. 19. The Example for Service “I . . . your Lord and Master, have washed your feet . . . I have given you an example” (John 13:14, 15). The Lord emphasized by this ex ample that He was among them as one who served. Our Christian char acter, and the reality of our relation ship to Christ, are demonstrated by our relationship one to another. That mind that was in Christ Jesus should be in us. “If we walk in the light . . . we have, fellowship one with an other.” And if we abide in that fel lowship, we will >be ready to serve one another in love.—Life of Faith. 20. By His Words “Abide in me, and I in you . . . If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love” (John.15:4, 10). We must study Christ’s words, keep them in our memory, obey them constantly, and let them shape and mold our daily life and our every act. . . . It is not by seasons of mystical meditation and rapturous experiences that we learn to abide, in Christ; it is by feeding upon His written words —Word and Work.

be the teacher. Do not come to prove your theory, out to find what is truth. Bengel’s second rule was, “Read noth ing into the Bible.” There needs to be a strong purpose and deep humil ity of spirit to follow this 'second rule. The third rule was: “Let nothing remain concealed in the Book.” . . . The first rule makes the result de pendable; the second makes it accu rate; the third makes it fully round ed, avoiding partial or half-views. —S. D. Gordon. 16. God-Anointed Words “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver” (Prov. 25:11). Our words and our voices are the tools we use in conversation. Some one has said: “Words are instruments of music; -when a master touches them they have unexpected life and soul . . We Christians should learn to use words that express our spirit and the Spirit that dwells in us.
