On the Night Watch against violence GREGGCHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Rockland | On a dark and cold Tuesday evening at the end of November candles flickered outside of the Rockland YMCA to offer the light of hope that in the future women and children will no longer need to fear violence. Members of the Prescott-Russell Coalition to End Violence Towards Women (PRCEVW) held a series of candlelight vigils through- out the region to mark both International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Nov. 25 and to commemorate the December 6 anniversary of the Mon- tréal Massacre in 1989 when a psychotic gunman murdered 14 women at the École polytechnique de Montréal. The Prescott-Russell Coalition to Elimi- nate Violence AgainstWomen is a collection of various organizations within the region, created in 2009 with the goal of creating public awareness about the abusive situ- ations many women and children face in their communities and to work towards eliminating those conditions. The PRCEVW’s three-point platform states that no woman or child should live in fear of violence and that it is the responsibility of the entire community to create a safe and secure environment for women and children. The community, through various agencies, must also provide victims of vio- lence with programs that meet their needs for protection and future security. The coalition held candlelight vigils in Rockland, Casselman and Hawkesbury be- tween Nov. 27 and Dec. 6. Alfred | The case books are closed on a pair of summer break-ins in Alfred. Police have charged a 28-year-old Alfred man with two separate break-and-enter in- cidents in July. The first burglary involved a house on Telegraph Road on July 18. The second took place at the St-Victor Parish building on St- Philippe Street on July 24. The accused is scheduled to appear in provincial court in L’Orignal on Dec. 5. Computer theft Wendover | Police are asking for help with a computer crime. A burglar broke into a home on Trillium Circle inWendover sometime during the af- ternoon of Nov. 13. The homeowner returned later that eve- ning and found a Hewlett-Packard model laptop computer missing along with an un- disclosed sum of money. Anyone with information can call Const.
