ART SCHOLARSHIPS

Art scholars work in the Casson Art School’s three bright, open-plan studios, equipped for canvas stretching, printmaking and more, with access to a suite of Macs running Adobe Creative Cloud. Studios are open six days a week and are large enough for pupils to create their own installations.The department also includes a well-equipped photography suite with its own darkroom, alongside a dedicated ceramics section featuring three kilns and a glazing area. Exhibition opportunities are extensive, with a new pop-up gallery in the art garden, as well as additional exhibition spaces in the Birley Centre and throughout the College. The department sits next to the Towner Gallery of Contemporary Art, recent host of the Turner Prize. Scholars regularly visit exhibitions and take part in Towner workshops run by professional artists.The College is also working with Sir Tim Smit, co-founder of the Eden Project, and the Towner on a new £11 million environmental and educational centre on the Downs - a future creative opportunity for our art scholars. Alongside weekly art lessons, scholars meet regularly with art teachers to develop new media skills and prepare work for a summer exhibition, and are encouraged to enter competitions such as the Royal Academy Young Artist of the Year and to pursue a Bronze Arts Award. Year 9 art scholars are mentored by senior scholars - for example, those interested in lens-based media can work with Sixth Form pupils studying photography at A-level. All art scholars join the College Visual Arts Society, which celebrates creativity across art, ceramics, design, film, photography and textiles, and connects current and former pupils working in creative industries.
WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM OUR APPLICANTS? Applications will need to show exceptional ability in drawing, but also painting and designing - possibly in three dimensions.The art scholarships are not recommended for product design candidates. Successful candidates are expected to study to GCSE, to participate in at least one art activity per term, and to take an active part in other art events at the College, all under the guidance of the Head of Art. Pupils will attend art scholar sessions during the school week and produce work for an exhibition in the summer term.All art scholars are expected to lead their classes in effort and attainment and to enter art competitions throughout their time at the College.
