When Ereshkigal Wakes		26

Something ancient has been awakened. It is powerful, alive, and moving inside all of us.		26
For many of us, this isn’t shock; it’s a sickening recognition. And this recognition lives in our bodies.		26
I feel it in myself, and I hear it everywhere — in late-night conversations, in messages from women I’ve known for decades and women I’ve never met, in the collective tightening and trembling that says: something buried is no longer willing to stay buried.		27
On a mythic level, this is what happens when the underworld is ignored for too long. What is buried does not disappear. It accumulates pressure. It begins to scream.		27
Ereshkigal is not monstrous. She is out of her mind with rage and anguish because she has been left alone with it all for so long.		27
THE UNDERWORLD SPEAKS In the ancient Sumerian myth, Ereshkigal rules the underworld, the realm of grief, trauma, rage, death, and all that has been exiled from the upper world of appearances and order. She is not the opposite of life; she is what life refuses to look at.		27
When Inanna, Queen of the Heavens, descends, she is stripped at each gate of all her worldly status, until she stands naked before her sister, without protection. Ereshkigal does not welcome her. She does not soften. She turns her gaze on her and screams wildly in such intensity that it kills Inanna.		27
While Inanna hangs lifeless on the hook, Ereshkigal goes into violent labor, screaming, convulsing, raging with a pain that has no witness and no release.		27
This is where the myth stops being ancient and becomes uncomfortably and potently current. Because nothing can calm Ereshkigal’s rage, not denial, not control, not avoidance. The only thing that can make any difference is the arrival of a witnessing presence.		27
Two small beings enter the underworld. They do not come to fix, explain, or spiritualize what is happening. They come with something that has been absent for centuries: the willingness to listen without turning away.		28
They sit with Ereshkigal as she speaks of her intense agony, and of the entire ancient storyline she carries in her body. The long history of violation: power taken without consequence, voices dismissed, bodies used and discarded, pain buried so life above ground could continue uninterrupted.		28
These two figures do not interrupt her or tell her to stop being hysterical; they do not require her pain to be palatable, provable, or resolved.		28
They allow everything to be spoken — the grotesque, the repetitive, the ancient — until nothing remains unsaid. Until the ghastly cauldron of pain is emptied.		28
And as they listen, they mirror her cries, with deep, embodied compassion that says: “Yes. This happened. Yes. This is real. Yes. This should never have been carried alone.”		28
This is love as witnessing. A witnessing that allows truth to move through our nervous systems without collapsing or armoring, and to be changed by what we hear rather than rushing to manage it.		28
It is only here that something finally shifts; the pain is received, not explained away.		28
Finally, Ereshkigal is not alone with her story. Her rage does not need to tear the world apart to be known. Love is felt as the profound relief of being met fully, without condition, inside the truth.		29
ERESHKIGAL SPEAKS I have been here the whole time.		29
I am the place where what was not witnessed or held went. I am the weight of pain and suffering that no one cared to listen to. I am the scream that had no ear to receive it.		29
I hold the stories you were told were too much. I hold the moments you were asked to forget in order to survive. I am all that disappeared because no one believed it or wanted to see it.		29
I am rising now with such power because I was never allowed to speak.		29
You feel me now in the memories surfacing without permission. This is not madness. This is memory returning.		29
Do you know what love feels like to me?		29
It is not the hand that seeks to rescue me from the underworld. It is the one who comes and sits beside me, with no expectation that I should be any different, that I should calm down or be palatable.		30
Love is the one who listens without needing my story to change. Love is the one who does not flinch when the truth becomes too much. Love is the one who keeps their feet on the ground and their heart open at the same time.		30
When you witness me like this, my rage softens, because it has been received. My grief loosens, because it is held.		30
Witness me, and I will not tear the world apart. Witness me, and what I carry can finally move. Witness me, and life can return.		30
ERESHKIGAL RISING Ereskigal is living within each one of us right now.		30
She is rising and calling forth a kind of love most of us were never taught — a love that does not fix, soothe, or explain, but that stays present without needing the experience in front of it to change. A love that is strong enough to remain rooted while another person’s truth moves through the room in its full weight.		30
Bearing witness is how we love in the face of injustice.		30
