FALL / WINTER 2022

WEDDINGS ARE MAGICAL. Despite your decor style, the details, the dress, when it comes down to it, it’s simply about celebrating you and your love.

This island chain is undoubtedly an idyllic place to enhance that magic moment, so it should come as no surprise that having a wedding here in Hawaii is a dream for both resident and destination couples. Whether you’re looking to tie the knot at a luxury hotel, alfresco with majestic mountains in the background, or on the beach with an intimate group, you’ll find the perfect venue here in Hawaii. And it will likely exceed your expectations. A little over five years ago, I celebrated my own wedding, held at a private estate on Oahu’s North Shore, overlooking the epic winter waves. As an avid surfer, my husband’s only request was that the location be oceanfront (okay, twist my arm), and up north when the waves were pumping (again, no problemo). If I had to describe our wedding vibe in three words, I’d say: casual, tropical, natural. Real coconut cups housed our signature cocktails and bird of paradise was aplenty. Guests were greeted with shell lei, and soulful Hawaiian music played until the mood shifted with the setting sun. It was, yes, magical. I have to say, the details did matter, if only for myself. I spent months saving wine bottles (not a bad task, I admit), to repurpose them into vases filled with tropical flowers and greenery that we harvested ourselves from a family friend’s farm in Waimanalo. The whole DIY experience and honoring the land made it that much more satisfying when the big day finally came. We talk more about how you can have a more sustainable wedding on page 38. By the way, it’s our first issue since the pandemic put the wedding industry on pause, and there’s a new team working hard to share the best of the best (though the mag’s previous owners have been here to guide us and we thank them for it!). Whether you’re newly engaged or an industry insider, we are thrilled you’re here and welcome you to follow along as we give you a glimpse into the wonderful world of Hawaii weddings. There’s almost too much awesome happening to cover it all, but we’re committed to trying.

With aloha,

FALL / WINTER 2022

FIRSTLY, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. Thank you to the strong, gracious, and inspiring local wedding community who welcomed our vision. The experiences you’ve shared, insights you’ve contributed, and support you’ve expressed have all been integral components to our journey in successfully shaping this new direction. Hawai‘i Wedding Style has been a staple for over 30 years, remaining the only local resource for couples, curated to showcase Hawai‘i’s wonderful and unique wedding industry. After a turbulent two years of an ongoing global pandemic, 2022 gifts us with a new generation and refreshed platform. Hawaii Wedding Style’s new strategic partnership with Ocean Blue Hawaii, a boutique marketing firm, and Takami Holdings, Japan’s largest privately owned wedding and lifestyle company, ensures valuable expansion to bring more exposure for our local wedding industry and Hawaii’s special community. It’s no secret that we’ve all endured such trying times, but the relentless compassion and dedication we’ve witnessed from your efforts have been truly exhilarating. Throughout this process of rebranding, we turned to the knowledge embedded in our conversations with you. It was through these intimate moments of sharing that we were able to learn, discover, and grow, ultimately guiding us as we devised a new strategy to appropriately align with the changed market today. Hawai‘i Wedding Style is set to publish digital editions on a bi-annual basis in addition to our annual print edition. We’ve also proudly launched a newly revamped website and immersive social media channel to personally connect with our audiences. THE ISLAND OF HAWAII, ALSO REFERRED TO AS "THE BIG ISLAND,” IS THE LARGEST IN THE HAWAIIAN ISLAND CHAIN. Here, you can experience a wide variety of climates, landscapes, and atmospheres on just this island alone. The Kohala Coast boasts the most sunny days out of anywhere in the Hawaiian Islands, while Hilo is recognized as being the wettest city in the United States. Hawaii Island is perfect for adventure seekers, nature lovers and those looking for something uniquely Hawaii. This island is home to the breathtaking Hamakua coast; lush rainforests, countless waterfalls, jet-black lava fields and the famous Punaluu black sand beaches, the Historic Kailua Village, cattle ranches and coffee farms, not to mention five major volcanoes. It is one of the few places in the world where you can sail and ski in the same day. On Hawaii Island, you'll experience the power of Native Hawaiian culture and feel an immediate connection to your natural surroundings. HAWAII ISLAND "THE BIG ISLAND"

MAUI "THE VALLEY ISLE"

FROM MAJESTIC COASTLINES TO COZY COUNTRY TOWNS, MAUI IS WHERE SLOW ISLAND LIFE MEETS MODERNITY. Whichever way you look, you’re embraced by stunning landscape: gorgeous greenery, verdant rainforests and a picturesque coastline. The iconic beaches of Kaanapali, which were frequented by Hawaiian royalty who returned to escape their daily routines, are now enjoyed by visitors from around the world. Lovers of golf, hiking, windsurfing, tennis and more, will appreciate all the athletic options this island has to offer. Whether you're looking to host a casual or contemporary beach wedding, or a fairytale-like affair in upcountry, you’ll find it on the island of Maui.

KAUAI "THE GARDEN ISLE"

THE ISLAND OF KAUAI IS THE OLDEST AND NORTHERNMOST ISLE. Its majestic emerald cliffs are something you’d see on a postcard, and are even more exceptional when you see them in real life. This sleepy little island is packed with aloha. From the laidback surf vibes of the North Shore, to the quaint town of Kapaa and long stretches of stunning beaches along the South Shore, to the unspoiled natural beauty of Waimea Canyon, Kauai is truly a picture- perfect paradise. Even residents living on neighbor islands look to Kauai as an escape—a place that serves as a welcome reminder of what exists outside of daily routines.

HOME TO HAWAII’S CAPITAL CITY OF HONOLULU, OAHU IS KNOWN AS THE GATHERING PLACE, THANKS TO ITS DIVERSITY IN PEOPLE, CULTURES AND EXPERIENCES. Oahu is where the action is. Historically, it is where the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown and where the USS Arizona was attacked at Pearl Harbor. Today, government officials convene in Honolulu, visitors flock to the resorts, restaurants, and nightlife of Waikiki Beach, and surfers from all over the world challenge themselves on epic waves at Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach. It’s the mix of modern and traditional that makes Oahu a desirable destination for all to enjoy. OAHU "THE GATHERING PLACE"

WHAT MAKES HAWAII’S WEDDING INDUSTRY SO SPECIAL? This seems like an easy question! Hawaii is truly one of the most gorgeous locations for a wedding. The weather is near perfect year round, the people who live here are kind and welcoming, and we're part of the United States, which makes it so easy for people to travel here. In addition, we're in the middle of the Pacific, so it's a great meeting point for destination couples who have family in Asia or elsewhere in the Pacific. The vendors who work in Hawaii also have such an amazing aloha spirit, not just to their guests and clients, but to each other. When I'm working at weddings, it really feels like I'm working with close friends and family, which the client will feel and that makes their day even more special. WHAT’S YOUR #1 ADVICE TO PEOPLE ON THEIR WEDDING DAY? Trust your vendors and enjoy your day! You've spent months, or even years, planning this day, so do everything you can to enjoy it.

TESSA GOMES AND JOSEPH ESSER PLANNING THEIR NEXT PODCAST.

PODCASTING FROM PARADISE TESSA AND JOSEPH, CO-HOSTS OF UNVEILING PARADISE, DIVE INTO DETAILS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES TAKING ON THIS EXCITING NEW JOURNEY.

WHO IS YOUR DREAM INTERVIEWEE? Joseph is dying to interview celebrities who just recently got married, and big name wedding planners like Colin Cowie and Preston Bailey. I'm really excited to do an episode about past couples and their tips for future brides. I think hearing advice from us as professionals is great, but validation from past brides always makes a strong impact. HOW OFTEN ARE YOU RELEASING NEW CONTENT? We publish an episode weekly, every Wednesday morning at 5 am.

Unveiling paradise, the podcast by Tessa Gomes, wedding planner and coordinator at Fred and Kate Events and Joseph Esser of Esser Photography + Video, offers two professional points of view about wedding planning and is bursting with personality. The two formed a bond over their industry expertise, but even more so as they came together to push for the reopening of the industry in the wake of the pandemic. “While sitting in a lot of heavy meetings [for Oahu Wedding Association], we realized that we often didn't agree on a lot of things, but we really enjoyed our conversations and debates with each other,” said Tessa.

We talked to Tessa about the podcast, why Hawaii weddings are so sought-after and more.

SUSTAINABLE IS THE NEW CHIC

BY NATALIE SCHACK

KEEP YOUR DREAM WEDDING CLASSY, AFFORDABLE, AND MINDFUL OF THE ENVIRONMENT.

ALWAYS LOOK LOCALLY FIRST There are so many incredible resources and incredible talented vendors who live right here in Hawaii! Hiring local business keeps money in the community, and you can even go the next step by requesting local flowers to cut down on the carbon footprint inherent in shipping, or opting for locally sourced food. HIT THE MARKETPLACES Waste is a huge thing in the wedding industry. The good news? That means people are often trying to offload the goods from their best day ever. Check Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, or even consider posting a request on a Buy Nothing page. You may even get lucky and find some pieces that are typically difficult to get in Hawaii, such as specialty decorations or unusual linen colors. DONATE AFTER THE ‘I DOS’ There are so many ways you can give back as a bride, whether you’re donating your day’s blooms to a care home, requesting donations to your favorite charity as wedding gifts, or giving small

donations in each guest’s name in lieu of wedding gifts. And if it all fits into the theme, even better—we love the idea of a tropical, ocean-inspired fete that includes pretty notecards at each place setting alerting guests that the couple donated $5 in their name to the Surfrider Foundation, for example. And ask your florist or planner about keeping those florals to give to elderly homes or hospitals later. LOOK FOR UPCYCLING OPPORTUNITIES Why produce more waste when you likely have a million untapped options in your home and life already? You just need a little creativity: think saving wine bottles to paint for centerpieces, or even crafting unique favor bags from scrap material you have around the house. Beyond the sustainability aspect, there's something so, so special about including these handmade or collected tokens from your own life into such a momentous occasion.

STUDIO FLORA MAUI Maui - No one has a to-do list longer than a bride. There’s catering to select, cakes to taste, venue managers to contact. The more flexible a vendor, the better, which is why Studio Flora Maui’s chic-meets-convenient approach is so appealing. The ladies behind this Wailuku- based brand are floral designer Mandy Grace and editorial stylist Shaunna Nygren, with an effortless aesthetic that is organic and loose, with playful touches and a fresh, modern feel. For these style-minded makers, it’s all about keeping things uncomplicated, unstuffy and anything but contrived. The Studio Flora arrangements are lively and fun, elegant yet spirited collections of stems that play with color and height, and give each bloom its chance to shine. And while there’s nothing simplistic about this kind of elevated stylishness, the Flora Maui team likes to keep logistics simple as possible for their busy brides. While they can work with

couples to create large-scale, customized creations, their specialty lies in the quintessential convenience of their online shop, on which guests can peruse offerings and place orders without the back and forth of custom quotes. Everything is priced on the website and is just waiting for any color or special design requests a bride may have, with bouquets, flower crowns, lei, corsages, and more—everything you’d need for a wedding—available to browse, with a minimum advance order time of just seven days. It’s ideal for microweddings, elopements, and other small celebrations, exactly the types of events Nygren and Grace had in mind when they started up shop. Find them at studiofloramaui.com. CREATIVE CONCEPTS BY JEFF Oahu - “Created by nature, styled by hand”: that's the philosophy of floral artist Jeff Alencastre of Creative Concepts by Jeff. Merging his expertise in both classic and modern design techniques, but eschewing any single style, Alencastre cites the beauty and nourishment of the natural environment as his biggest

inspiration. With each creation, he seeks to embody the movement of the foliage and flowers, with an end result that is the perfect marriage between au naturel elements and sophisticated craftsmanship. Think fairy tale curtains of lush roses, arches positively dripping with clusters of orchids, or statement-making bouquets featuring playful next to high-drama proteas. And with over a decade of experience in the event business and floral-design world, Alencastre brings a top-to-bottom understanding of occasions to his work. That means elegant, seamless installations and a no-stress approach from setup to breakdown. It also means an eye for that singular, stand- out element that will take each event to the next level. It’s different for every couple, so Alencastre’s approach is ultra-personalized, resulting in bespoke events that push boundaries and make statements. Maybe one duo is looking for an ethereal design that evokes timeless luxury, with classic styles and a traditional color scheme. Or, a bride envisions a boho-style wedding drenched in dreamy romance, moody gem tones, and sultry stems. Alencastre is already looking ahead to how he’ll integrate some of his favorite 2023 trends into this customized approach: Clean, neutral shades paired with contrasting pops of mysterious earthy tones like chocolate and burgundy. Fresh, full flowers accented with small, eccentric texture touches of dried grasses and seed bods. Or, clean, classic white palettes with a twist of tropical monstera leaves and timeless hydrangeas for a Hawaii-meets- traditional aesthetic. In other words? A lineup of florals as unique as each couple. Find them at jeffalencastre.com.

THE PUA BAR Kaua‘i - When covid-19 travel and flights ground to a halt in early 2020, flight attendants Tasha Rames and Haylee Kam were faced with an unexpected sort of crossroads. What, for these typically high-flying women, in these low times, was next? They ended up finding a pretty beautiful answer, in the uplifting world of flowers. The Pua Bar is exactly what it sounds like: A flower shop with DIY bouquets in mind, meaning guests craft their perfect arrangement by picking and choosing from the array of stems up for sale. Instead of being constrained to pre-made choices, or stuck with ordering an entire box of each bloom, this personalized experience is both freeing and fun—and has captured the hearts of Kauaians in the last couple of years. While The Pua Bar started as a pop up, the growing demand for more from the community inspired the duo to finally set up a permanent shop at Kilohana Plantation.

Now, pua business continues to bloom and boom— and expand. You’ll still find the beloved pua bar itself available for DIY bouquets, but The Pua Bar also provides arrangements and flowers for private events, weddings and more. Come before your wedding for a fun bridal party activity, or enlist the mobile pua bar for a baby shower or birthday activity workshop. In any event, the sky’s the limits for these newfound entrepreneurs, who continue to get more and more attention: At their shop’s one- year anniversary this past summer, the Mayor of Kauai even named August 21 “Pua Bar Day” in their honor! Find them at thepuabar.com. GRACE FLOWERS HAWAII Hawaii Island - It’s everything you’re looking for from a florist: Arrangements with artfulness and elegance; with exquisite aromas and vibrant petals; with ultra-fresh flowers and warm, earthy greens. Honokaa-based Grace Flowers Hawaii’s creations offer all of this, but they put their focus on an additional quality that’s just as charming: Sustainability.

You’ll see this reflected in multiple ways, whether it’s by composting waste or upcycling whenever possible. They’re also an official member of the Slow Flowers organization and directory, by sourcing their materials locally as much as they can. Slow Flowers is a self-styled movement that’s all about connecting and elevating floral businesses and professionals in their communities, promoting local flowers, and establishing the value of local, seasonal and sustainably-grown. As a result, Grace Flowers Hawaii has a close relationship with many local flowers farmers in The Big Island, you’ll find stems and blooms from all over the island, including Daisy Dukes in Papaaloa, Always Anthuriums in Mountain View, C&C Tropicals in Keaau, and many more. You’ll find localvore blooms from farms like these in Grace Flowers work for corporate events, weddings and other private functions. Or, stop by the Grace Flowers Hawaii retail shop in historic Honokaa for cut stems, along with potted plants, lei, and, ready-to-go, pre-made arrangements. Find them at graceflowershawaii.com

Pop the question or elope on this picturesque monohull, or treat your wedding party to a day of sun, sea, snorkeling and sunset. The modern yacht features three private cabins, two heads, a living area, and full galley, and is designed to sail the quiet coves or venture into the deep blue. Charter the luxury sailboat for your wedding party’s daytime adventure, where a 5-hour tour will take you to explore the Pailolo or Auau channels. The reef and marine preserves of West Maui offer some of the best snorkeling in the state, and your guests can experience it firsthand with Kainani Sails’ in-water guide. Alternatively, the Sunset Tour takes a 3-hour ride during golden hour, with the setting sun the perfect backdrop for a romantic proposal or elopement. If your wedding takes place between December and April, don’t miss the Whale Watching tour which gets you up close and

personal with the gentle giants and can even listen to the whales’ melodies through the on-board hydrophone. Kainanisails.com KAUAI SEA TOURS Eleele, Kauai - The Na Pali coast of Kauai is arguably one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, and the most picturesque backdrop you could dream for your nuptials. Dramatic folds of verdant green frame hidden beaches that are only accessible by foot or by boat. This is where Kauai Sea Tours comes in. This family-owned business has been serving the North Shore of Kauai for 30 years and they are focused on customizing an itinerary perfect for your wedding party. Departing from Port Allen, one of the company’s two 40- or 60-foot catamarans can deliver your wedding party to a larger on-shore venue. Planning a more intimate affair? You can have the event on-board the catamaran itself for up to 49 people. Kauai Sea Tours is committed to helping your vision of your special day come to life—whether a wedding, elopement, or trash the dress—and can help organize all of the vendors and elements you may need. Additionally, they organize raft tours for up to 14 people that explore the sea caves and let you get up close and personal with

the majestic coastline. They are one of the only operators with a special-use permit to land the raft on the Na Pali coast in order to give a narrated cultural walking tour of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village at Nualolo Kai. Their skilled captains and crew have an intimate knowledge of Kauai’s nature, history and conservation and will help to make your event that much more memorable. Kauaiseatours.com LIGHTSUP HAWAII Waimea, Hawaii Island - Treat your wedding guests to a completely unique experience by booking a standup paddleboarding tour with LightSUP Hawaii. Its custom-made paddleboards featuring a large viewing window at the front of the board and LED lighting set the company apart. The tours themselves are doable

for any skill level, and the viewing window is a perfect solution for guests who are otherwise scared to don a mask and snorkel. Your party will love the morning tour, which paddles over the Kohala reef— one of the largest reefs in the state—as the sun rises over Mauna Kea and pods of dolphins pass nearby. For those looking to experience the ocean at night, the Sunset Tour lights up the coral below with the LED lights on the board, offering a glimpse into the reef’s activity after dark. While there may be many tour operators cruising the Kona coast of Hawaii Island, this family-owned operation focuses on the reef in front of the tiny coastal village of Puako away from the crowds, making for a more intimate and authentic experience.

Raymond Schmidt and Kelly Nedved, the charming couple who own and operate the tours, live in Puako themselves, and are passionate about educating their guests about the importance of the coral reef. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and you will leave impressed by both the beauty of the area and their generous spirit of aloha. Not to to mention, part of LightSUP’s proceeds go to coral reef restoration and research. Lightsuphawaii.com MANU KAI & NA HOKU II CATAMARANS Waikiki, Oahu - “We are big, yellow, and fun!” says Krystine Samson-Boughton, the general manager of Na Hoku II and Manu Kai catamarans, the go-to boats for fun-in- the-sun along Oahu’s southern shore. Two of only six boats allowed to operate directly off of Waikiki Beach, the catamarans will pick you up in front of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and set sail further east, allowing you to take in the iconic views of the beaches of Waikiki and Diamond Head. They are the perfect activity to recommend to your wedding guests as there is a sail for everyone, and the cost is comparable to having a couple of drinks at a bar, so why not do so at sea? The Manu Kai is a bit more family friendly, with tours that include snorkeling at Turtle Canyon, happy hour sails, sunset sails, and Friday night firework sails. All tours include three mai tais, soft drinks or beers. The Na Hoku II also has one-hour daytime and sunset sails daily for a higher energy, party atmosphere and a more extensive bar. Both boats are available for private charters of up to 49 people at all tour times, perfect for welcome or bachelor and bachelorette parties. Nahoku2.com & Sailmanukai.com

KONA SALT FARM

BY IJFKE RIDGLEY

UPSCALE ELEGANCE MEETS BACKYARD VIBES AT THIS QUAINT BEACHSIDE LOCATION.

Hidden in a corner of the Hawaii Ocean Science Technology park on the westernmost point of Hawaii Island, just a stone’s throw from the Kona airport, is the Kona Salt Farm. The location may seem like an unlikely place to tie the knot, but it recently debuted as a new wedding venue, offering peaceful oceanfront property with a unique history. The working salt farm produces a special 900-year-old deep sea salt not found anywhere else in the world, as it is a biproduct of the saltwater pumped up from 2,200-feet below the surface. The Global Conveyor Belt of ocean currents delivers the nutrient-rich water from Greenland directly to the coast of Hawaii Island, free of surface pollutants. Salt is significant in Hawaiian traditions—used in ceremonial blessings, the blessing of voyaging canoes, and to preserve and purify—and marks a great way to bless your new journey together. You can also harvest or select your own salt to give as favors. If you are looking for a memorable, picturesque venue different from the usual resort setting (yet close enough to nearby hotels and the town of Kailua-Kona for your guests), the Kona Salt Farm may be for you. The site is blessed with spectacular sunsets where the natural landscape of lava rock and fountain grass meet the ocean. The farm is rented as venue space, leaving you the option to create the event of your dreams with any caterer, music, or food truck you desire. They also provide air-conditioned bride and groom suites, a staging kitchen, and the soon-to-be-finished indoor Moku Nui room for group dinners. Farm furniture and a working fire pit add to the rustic charm of this gem of a location by the sea. Konasaltfarm.com
