CLEAN-UP AND SAFETY PROCEDURES (formed stool/vomit in pool/spa water) 1. Ensure the filtration system is continuously operating until clean-up and decontamination is complete. 2. Raise free available chlorine concentration to a minimum of 2 ppm. The water pH should be between 7.2 – 7.5. The water temperature should be about 77°. 3. Maintain chlorine concentration, pH, and temperature for 25-30 minutes before reopening the pool/spa area. 4. Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water. CLEAN-UP AND SAFETY PROCEDURES (diarrhea/liquid stool in pool/spa water) 1. Raise free available chlorine concentration to a minimum of 20 ppm. The water pH should be between 7.2 – 7.5. The water temperature should be about 77°. Maintain chlorine concentration, pH, and temperature at these levels for at least 12.75 hours. Chlorine stabilizer (if present) must be below 50 ppm sufficiently inactivate Cryptosporidium. Data suggests it would take approximately 30 hours to kill 99.9% of Cryptosporidium in the presence of 50 ppm or less cyanuric acid, 40 ppm free chlorine, pH 6.5 and a temperature of 77° F or higher. 2. Backwash the filter thoroughly and discharge to waste. 3. Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water. a. Swimmers may be allowed into the pool/spa when the free available chlorine level has been returned to the normal operating range allowed by the state or local regulatory authority. CLEAN-UP AND SAFETY PROCEDURES (Blood in pool/spa water) • Germs (Hepatitis B virus or HIV) found in blood are spread when infected blood or certain body fluids get into the body and bloodstream by sharing needles and by sexual contact. CDC is not aware of any blood-borne germs being transmitted to swimmers from a blood spill in a pool. • These germs do not survive long when diluted into properly chlorinated pool/spa water. • There is no public health reason to close the pool/spa area after a blood spill; however, the GM or MOD should use their own discretion on a closure decision due to the amount of blood, guest complaints, or other factors. • Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
